Some facts: -The man-made saltwater lagoon has been attracting huge crowds to the San Alfonso del Mar resort at Algarrobo, on Chile's southern coast, since it opened last month. -Its turquoise waters are so crystal clear that you can see the bottom even in the deep end. -It dwarfs the world's second biggest pool, the Orthlieb - nicknamed the Big Splash in Morocco, which is a mere 150 yards long and 100 yards wide. An Olympic size pool measures some 50 yards by 25 yards. -Chile's monster pool uses a computer- controlled suction and filtration system to keep fresh seawater in permanent circulation, drawing it in from the ocean at one end and pumping it out at the other. -The sun warms the water to 26 C, nine degrees warmer than the adjoining sea. -Chilean biochemist Fernando Fischmann, whose Crystal Lagoons Corporation designed the pool, said advanced engineering meant his company could build 'an impressive artificial paradise' even in inhospitable areas. -'As long as we have access to unlimited seawater, we can make it work, and it causes no damage to the ocean.' -The Guinness Book of Records recently named the vast pool beside the sea in Chileas the biggest in the world. -But if you fancy splashing out on one of your own - and you have the space to accommodate it - then beware: This one took five years to build, cost nearly $1 billion and the annual maintenance bill will be $2 million. -It is more than 1,000 yards long, covers 20 acres, had a 115 ft deep end and holds 66 million gallons of water Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Lol my mom swims about a mile every day in about half an hour, and in order to swim that she'd only need two lengths of that pool. Its on her "bucket list" so to speak
I read it to mean length. You can see where it starts it on the photograph of the pool. Looks like that may be about 115 feet to the end.
The resorts on site say the pool only holds 2.5 million liters of water. That does not sound like enough.
Thats only 660,000 gallons. Maybe the pool's only 2 inches deep. You're right though Doc. It isn't even close to being enough. They claim that the pool is 8 Hectacres large. This is about 19.7 Acres large. It takes about 326,000 gallons of water to flood 1 acre to 1 foot deep...so do the math. Takes about 6.4 million gallons to cover 8 hectacres to 1 foot deep. In Andy's original post he said 66,000,000 gallons. Maybe the resort missed a few zeros when they were putting the volume of water on their site. 66 Million gallons would be something like 250 million liters.
Spot on, they missed three ceros. Pool Length = 1000 meters Avg. Width = 80 meters (8 hectares / 1000m) Avg. Depth = 3.12 meters (my calculation to back engieneer the volume of 66m gallons) 1000 x 80 x 3.12 = 250,800 cubic meters = 250,800,000 liter = 66,000,000 gallons
Maybe we should send them an email and let them know to correct their website. Maybe we can get a comp stay at the resort They only missed two zeros BTW. 2,500,000 has 5 zeros in it and 250,000,000 has 7 zeros...but what's a couple of zeros between friends...right??
I wonder if they are putting some sort of reef (diving attraction) down there or were they just adding water for the bragging rights?
No way it is 115 ft DEEP. From the over head shot water, even 100% pure, would be a very dark indigo blue in the deep end.
I'd doubt that they were talking about depth. Has to be length. Even if they are planning on putting some sort of diving attraction down in the deep end 115 feet surpases the depth that most recreational dives go to. Plus if they have a 115ft deep deep end this would start to multiply the number of gallonage required to fill it.
Well, I guess that I am a moron. This YouTube Clip says that the pool is 35 meters deep. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-OBQ5iwEIw Fun calculations: I figure that it would cost me about $465,528 to fill that pool with water from my tap at home...although if I hooked the hose to the sprinkler system I would save about $221,117 of that.
Just watched the video--Lamour will enjoy it at about the 1:15 mark. No volume when I watched it, but I don't see anywhere that could be so deep. Seeing all the kids in the video, the missing water is probably accounted-for with urine.
If you look at the far left of the picture...it is considerably darker than the rest of the pool. Also on a side note....I think using the ocean as a water source is kind of cheating
Wait until one of the Prince's over in Dubai here's about it-----they will have that beat here soon....
Yeah, they've been building this a long, long time. In fact, isn't this where they filmed the pool scene from Caddyshack? Image Unavailable, Please Login
