    Pretty cool story.

I worked at an aquarium for a couple years and several times had to help catch the bigger Atlantic stingrays (80 pounds) when the vet needed to examine them. That big sharp stinger on their tail could certainly hurt you (Steve Irwin RIP) but I found them to be pretty docile and gentle creatures that really were a pleasure to work with.

These guys are catching freshwater rays. The venom in their stinger is even more painful than ocean rays so it pays to be careful.

Why did I come to Vietnam?

I wanted to meet exotic creatures from far away lands, and kill them.

Impressive creature. Too bad it had to die to put a feather in the guys cap :(

(note: I am not against fishing, I love sport fishing, but IMO it's sad when an especially impressive example of any animal is killed, be it a huge bear, fish, etc, etc).

I agree with you. But the way they are holding it in the tarp makes me think this is a catch and reslese. Only a small part of the ray is out of the water for the photo.

The guy talks about his plan to tag these fish for study of the population.

You could be right but he'd be taking a chance being where he is holding the tail in only one hand.

My guess again...would be after a 7 hour fight, the fish is just to tired to fight anymore.

I still fell sorry for the fish, fighting till its exhausted, but if it helps them count, and map the population to help save the fish....well I guess its got some merit.

Rays are pretty interesting animals. They are part of family of creatures known as Elasmobranchs and are closely related to sharks. If I had more space (and a big budget) I'd have a pool with cownose rays in it. They're social creatures that travel in schools and actually like being touched by humans.
