For some reason unknown to me I decided that this was the time to have the second gear synchro repaired on my 365. I thus took it in to Norwoods for a looksy and a quote on it and the clutch (while we're at it) and maybe rejetting the carbs (I hear modern fuels flow better through a slightly larger diameter and it's cheap). Norwoods is great, I should say at this point. James showed me the worn second gear and explained that there's no point repairing just that while the box is out of the car. Meanwhile, the internal parts for a gearbox (of which there are unsurprisingly many) are super expensive and have to be sourced from England and Italy. The car is otherwise strong and I hope I won't regret sinking all of this money into it. Anyway, I'll have a new clutch and renewed gearbox in a couple of weeks.

    David,

I just went through this on a Daytona box. I am reminded of the experience by the movie Forrest Gump: Life is like a box of candy; you never know what you're going to get until you open it up.

On a little more serious note, I believe some of the syncro rings for the older transmissions have been back ordered for some time. Will be interesting to see what your experience is.

    Good luck.

    Keep us informed.

And we know who got the last "available" set....and I have no more, either!

Good luck with this project, David.
It will be a very rewarding experience when done...

well I haven't heard anything from Mike or James at Norwood to confirm that they've tracked down all the parts. Something tells me that they' ll get them. It'll take a while and it sure as hell isn't cheap, but she deserves it.

i'm pretty sure it was me...$225 for a perfect set of 5 off Ebay from Tony Randazzo...and they're earmarked for my 365 that's still in Buffalo.

everything else will be available from Classic Parts or Eurospares...so the only concern will be the 'rings...so if you're 'stuck' for 1, let me know.

i'll be watching this space with interest to see how it goes...and what the bill totals (although you may not be planning to share that info ?)

there really isn't that much labour, so if it doesn't turn into a 'while you're there' nightmare (beyond the tranny), it won't be too bad ($).

and absolutely, 'she' most definitely deserves it...they are really, really remarkable cars...just fantastic when they are 'all there'.

While you have it apart you should think about replacing the center drive shaft bearing. Brett is looking into a replacement bearing for my car.

Well, since you ask, very expensive. But, with all those internals swapped out for new and a new clutch I should expect it. The good news is that it drives great. I really only had noticed a problem with the downshift to second. But, since it was out, James thought it made since to do it right. I agreed. Now I can up or downshift to second and breathe easy about issues with the other gears cropping up in years to come. The car is a very strong driver and was worth it. The only mechanical issue I have at this point is a slight hesitation at 2500 rpm that's more noticeable the harder you are on the gas. I think the months of inactivity have the let the gas get a bit stale and the carbs need to be exercised.

    "slight hesitation at 2500 rpm"

I switched the mains from 125 to 130 and it helped with this. Some have gone all the way to 135. Got them from Pierce Manifolds.

Out of curiosity, are those something you could have a local machine shop make?
