The two cars were both Bizzarrini P538s. No less a magazine than Hemmings speculated that Bizzarrini tried to sell the leftover race cr as a coupe but I found a picture of the Duca d'Aosta white split window coupe at Pebble, don't know what year the picture was taken but I think the Manta was already found (unclaimed at Customs so was auctioned)so the two cars existed simultaneously. Also the Manta failed to sell at Monterey auction so has the owner found another way to sell it? Also the original color of the Manta was aqua, and when it was loaned ro Giugiaro for his shop's 25th anniversary he painted it a more svelte silver gray. I was wondering if purists think a one off car should only be restored to the way it was when it was introduced?

The Manta is still in Calif. so if P538 cars with LeMans provenance ever get real valuable and the Manta's chassis is proven to have raced there it might be worth removing the Manta body and returning it to LeMans spec. I doubt that will happen as there's a couple fake P538's confusing the issue as to which car is the real car....

Nobody ever believed the Manta was built out of the Duke's P538 ( white coupe) ? It was once believed it was built out of the Lemans P538, but that car exists so it was most likely built out of Mike Gammino's first P538, or the left over parts after it crashed during testing. If you look at the Manta build pictures you can see it has a new frame fabricated to fit the larger road car.
