Just a trivial question if anybody knows.... I'm putting together a big halloween party for the kids, planning on doing a hay-ride where black flourescent lights will be used to light-up objects. White cloth and neon colors really jump-out and light up under black light, other colors are hit & miss. One person told me I could take some Tide detergent, mix it with water and apply it to anything and it'll react under the black light: DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO GET THINGS TO SHOW UP MORE UNDER BLACK LIGHT? The "Party Store" has some small aerosol cans that spray something that makes things light-up on black lights, but these small/tiny cans are kinda pricey and I have a LOT of stuff I want to use it on. I'm sure somebody here has some experience with special effects, parties, lighting, etc......thanks! (and yes, I'll go back to the store and look at the ingredients on those cans....)
Try this site: http://wolfstone.halloweenhost.com/TechBase/bltmat_BlackLightMaterials.html In particular laundry stuff: detergents, RIT, Woolite, etc. Other interesting stuff mentioned include tonic water, highlighter ink, some fishing line (webs?), etc.
Ya see.....that's FerrariChat for ya: I post some totally-unrelated to Ferrari issue and in less then 5 minutes I have some answers & resources!! THANKS! Spider webs are cheap, they sell little bags of spider web stuff at the store for a few bucks. You'd think the white would stand-out the best, but the neon green is jumps-out at ya! The purple web says on the package it does, but in testing it's pretty null. Some of the white skeletons I bought do jump-out under black lights, while others don't. Ya gotta love Halloween...
here is a product my uncle owns a patent on. Is is awsome! You can buy any color and it is invisible until under blacklight. clearneon.com
STEVE IF YOU WANT TO GET FREAKED OUT WITH STUFF JUMPING OUT OF BLACK LIGHTS , do a couple hits of acid.
Better yet, skip the decorations and just give it to the kids. Tell them you're dressed up as "the breathing wall creature" and two hours into it tell them that it's actually Easter. Have the appropriate bunny suit ready. Just kidding!
Nope, I've never stared at the floral design on a placemat for two hours straight.. I don't know what you're talking about.
hey we spray painted my firends garage and we just used construction line painting stuff, it lights up really well(avaliable at Frazee sp?). Another thing that lights up is the wire in weed wackers, it makes for cool things hanging from the ceiling. If you have any more questions about stuff that lights up pm me casue we built the whole garage to glow Nick
Wow, thanks for the interest guys... And to think, John Lamour is addressing me, by name. Me, a lowly newbie with less then 4 digits to my posting credit and I'm getting the attention of reknown f-chat pervert John Lamour. Now things are complete. I'd take the suggestion of using acid, but it may conflict with my meth habit...better check with a pharmacist to make sure there's no conflict or narcotics. A bit of background. Two years ago I hooked my 6x10 trailer (filled with 4" of hay) to the back of my Hummer. I let kids get in, took them across the street to an acre I own, and called it the Halloween Hummer Hayride. They loved it, it was a day-time party, couldn't keep them off the hayride/trailer. This year we're doing a night-time halloween party, so I get this idea to take a bunch of pumpkins, line the long driveway with them and create a night-time hayride. Then the idea of black-lights came: having a large 10' wide and 100' long black tarp with white figures above, ghost coming out from trees, tomb-stones moving, skeletons, etc. People in total black animating things, etc. I went downtown to the toy district and loaded up on all sorts of halloween stuff. Some of the stuff glows nicely under the black lights, but some of it (like the white-plastic skulls) does nothing!! Btw, you MUST use flourescent black lights, the incandescent black light bulbs you buy at Target won't work at all. So that's what's up, just trying to figure out ways to make the most of it. The black lights will be attached to the sides of the trailer and run via a power-converter. Already I can tell this is gonna be really cool. Wow...John Lamour, can't get over that....
Ultraviolet "black" lights can cause harm if you are directly exposed to them or look directly at them. See for example: http://www.longviewweb.com/uvcaut.htm This is not to freak you out - just be aware and be careful - for example, use "black lights" where they will illuminate things, but where the bulbs themselves are not directly visible.
Rachane, Excellent point, valid too! I'm using 3 lights, all of which point 180-degrees AWAY form the trailer/hayride: the occupants will NOT see the bulb directly itself, only what it projects towards & illuminates. I'm not surprised to learn that black light can cause problems, it's pretty intense to look at. I just got done with an experiment. I took a box of Tide and put it under black light, sure enough, it glows bright: fabric brighteners/whiteners account for that. So I took some of the powder, added water and sprayed it on some stuff......the tombstone that hardly illuminated now illumates a bit, but not enough. Gotta check out that spray stuff at the store OR pop the $16 for the stuff Bonedoc mentioned.
steve, after 744 posts i consider you one of us. welcome my brother. this dosnt mean i wont break your balls anymore, but i do i love ya now.
