Does every Dino have the "rain gutters" to the deck lids and around the roof(for GTS)painted satin black? How high should the satin black that runs along the underbody come up. I have a very nice GTS that appears correct but I have seen so many variations that I am not sure what is correct. I have a photo of the yellow car on my blog www.rpmvt.com. Click on the blog link
I don't think there's an exact science as to where the black paint should stop on the rockers. Everyone agrees that directly under the door is too high, but I've seen 8 or 10 Dinos, and no two are exactly alike. My mechanic joked that you can tell what day of the week the car was painted by this line. LAter in the week, the higher it goes. The guy in the paint booth gets tired as the week rolls along, making it harder to stoop down to mask off the line. DM
i would agree that most cars have been repainted by now. it would be interesting to see an original, not repanited car, shown. however, i think it is up to us to debate only because the cars varied so much. my gold dino (08468) was only resprayed in the original color in 1990 or so. the owner that owned it from 74 until 90 said it is the same as when he owned it, even considering the spyder top color, mirror color, mirror spec on the car. i was very surprised when he looked at them and said, no that is what it looked liked when i owned it.
Dan, Pics & specs from your choice Dino would be most appreciated! It'll be fun to see how close our cars are to an original! Cheers...
I've looked at countless photos and it's true there seems to be no uniformity between them. I would imagine that Ferrari originally left it to the "painter of the day" to freestyle the line onto the bodywork and thus it depended on how his back was that day and probably to the extent that by Friday those cars had the line higher up! Guess that was how it was back then. however i have the opinion that the car looks far better if one aplies the stone chip first and then body colour after over the top. Thus the beautiful lines of the car are unadulterated. I will be applying this rule to my car when it's finally painted, but the fact that she will be going back to her original black makes it a little easier! Regards, G P.
I played around a lot after changing from white to blue. After looking at dings on white, I put line 1/4" above crease under doors. Then decided that black should go above front heater fan inlets in front and just above exhaust reliefs in rear. Took two guys and a lift to get a good looking line that went from there to the center section. Get car on lift with side center line at eye level. One guy runs tape. Other guy stands about 20 feet away and connects end lines to side lines with a straight line. Line is imaginary as it crosses wheels. That line looks good at any angle once car is back on ground. Black paint was rubberized undercoat and it held up just fine. Did the same on last repaint. All my rain gutters were body color and I repainted them with blue and clear coat. Never did remove side windows so covered small area behind seats with satin black. Goes fine with black upholstery. Rain pans under louvers and underside of hatches are all satin black. Epoxy from spray cans holds up well. Heat from engine is hard on engine cover. I do run in dirt and gravel on occasion and the undercoat earns its keep. Worth the effort. My lines are virtually the same as the yellow Dino in the photo. John
maybe some pix will help. Here's where mine was before it went in for it's repaint. Image Unavailable, Please Login
My impression was that the black started about 1/4" above the crease that seperates the "body" to the rocker panel or the crease just below the door. The Orange car on Symbolic is much higher, maybe because it had a chip down low, easier to paint that black than to match the orange!
