Okay, I purchased a set of black (60s) reproduction plates (California) that match my current plates (MIO DINO). So the big question is - do I risk putting my new 2007 tags on the black plates and putting them on the car (I would keep the real plates in the trunk) or stay with the real plates? I am willing to risk a fix-it ticket but not willing to risk having the Spyder towed. Until recently, I was not going to do it but the other day I saw a car with reproduction black plates in traffic (it was a vanity plate with 5 letters which did not exist in the 60s so I know it was not a real plate) and I decided to reconsider. Much like today's TV shows, I decided to let the "viewers" vote on my ultimate decision. What do you guys think?

I don't know the laws in CA but i was thinking of doing this same thing for my Triumph Spitfire. I was hoping to get PA plates with the same number as the English plate in the car and then just drive it around with the English plates. I say go for it. You only live once :D

I think they will catch you ask you to go with the current style plate. Our licence plate statutes in Montana describe the current style plate and disallows any old style plates unless otherwise stated. I think most states are the same where the statutes describe what is acceptable. Alot of States change plates to catch delinquent tax payers(easier to see the new plates vs. tabs) IIRC in California the blk/yellow plates are exceptable on the car the were originally registered to only. If you were to take a blk plate car out of CA and register it in another state and then bring it back to CA you wouldn't be able to use the old style plate. Regards, Vern

That's what happened to my car. It was a black plate CA car, sold out of state, then I bought it and brought it back. No can do on the black license plate deal, so I've got shiny new white plates (yuk).

By the way, this topic is also being discussed in vintage section, here: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107199

The great State of WA is a bit more progressive; $38 one time fee, no annual renewal, no smog test required AND you don't need a front plate. You can even mount a period plate, if it is correct for the year, else they issue a current collector car plate.
