    I was under the impression that a black suit is only to be worn at funerals, or by clergy men. I was having a discussion with my friend (who is getting married soon) about black suit etiquette. He suggested to me that I should wear one. I am not in the wedding. Other then a funeral, is a black suit to be worn at other functions? The wedding is taking place in the afternoon, followed by an evening after party. What do you guys think is proper?

    I'd wear a black suit but dress it up w a shirt w nice loud stripes OR a fun tie so it doesnt look so somber

    Black suite, white shirt bright (green, pink or yellow) tie. Can't beat looking sharp. I think blak suites are fine for any occasion, as long as you accessorize properly. I wouldn't wear a black suit and black tie to a wedding, or a dark shirt or something. But black is classic.

    carter did not get elected for a second term because he preferred blue suits.
    real men wear black for all occasions.

    It's my reverse psychology outfit... I wear it, everyone thinks I'm a hit man, I tell them I'm not and then flash a vague grin and then they have no idea what to believe...

    The old traditional rules were not to wear black to a wedding because the male members of the wedding party would be wearing black and it may take attention away from them. Also because a wedding is a celebration attendants were to wear something other than black because black was for mourning. Black was also said to be bad luck for the couple if people were wearing black.

    Today I think black would be fine, with a light shirt and brighter colored tie like others have said. I don't think anyone would really be paying attention to what color your suit is.

    Why is that? I am just a young buck, but have never heard this before. Matter of fact, ane of the most succesful business men I know wears almost exclusively black and charcoal grey suits.

    I've heard this too but I think it is another one of those old tradition sort of things. The rule was/is blue or gray. I do think lighter colors look much nicer than black, especially for business. When I see someone in a plain black suit I think of a priest or Men In Black.

    Yeah, I never heard that rule before. I thought black was the "power suit".
