I'd love to hear real world feedback of black vs. tan (or other dark vs. light) interiors in convertibles. Obviously dark = hotter, but is the difference terribly noticeable? I'm particularly interested in hearing feedback from owners in warm weather urban climates (i.e. Southern California, Florida, Texas, etc.) where there's lots of low speed, hot weather driving.

Matt, My 355 is a B, but I use a Miata as a daily driver. It has a light tan interior and in the heat of summer, well, it is stinkin hot no matter what I do, so I just put the roof up. So, I figure it doesn't matter what the interior colour is, as in the warmer climates you'll have to put the roof up and the air on..

My 380SL has a dark blue leather interior but I have a cockpit cover for it so no worries about the heat - its very easy to put on and keeps the interior from getting crap in it plus is a deterrent as well. Go with what you like and maybe in a spider have a cockpit cover made for when you park.

    Cheers
    Kevin

Depends on the colour of the car really. I think tan would be better with red and black with yellow.

I drove a black/tan 328 GTS in Hawaii for a couple days, and I own a black/black 328 GTS. While driving, not much of a difference (they both have black dashes anyway), but when they sit with the windows up, the dark seems to heat up quicker.

i have owned a 360 spider with a tan interior and911 and vette conv. with black interiors...there is difference in inside temps and it is noticalbe...black interior with black exterior is esp not!!!! tan looks better with red ,black looks good with the silver variations...of course tan is harder to keep clean...i dont generally like black interiors because it makes the interior look very stark and somber....

I read and understand the question and you will be most comfortable with and totally justify the colour combination you like visually most.

If interior temperature really makes a realistic difference for you, then you are too spoilt for choice and have no real inclination to any colour combo.

Red on black ( but red on tan would have done nicely too)
Red on cream = puke, As for the temperature benefits = wtf ? who cares :) open the window.

Just pick the color combination that you like. Here in Florida, and when I lived in Arizona, any non-cloth interior got really hot, had to carry a towel to put under my thighs when wearing shorts.

Black goes with every exterior color.

In the deep south, both my Black Ferrari & Motego Blue Miata w/ black interiors are so much hotter than my white 240Z w/ black int or white RX-7 (sun roof) w/ black int. I use front window shields in all cars & have tinted windows in the Miata & Z. Ultimately, it seems to me like the exterior color makes for the oven & not the black interior. W/ top down direct sun does heat up black seats. I try not to move around much & blast the AC at stop lights.

I live in Scottsdale, AZ. One of the local television stations did a test of the inside temperature of cars. They were doing this test because of the accidental deaths of children when the parents left children inside of cars with the windows rolled up. Anyway, black interiors had the highest temperatures of 165 degrees. Tan interiors were 125 degrees

I'm obsessive, so take this for what it's worth, but black is a lot easier to keep clean-looking in convertibles. Cream is a battle, tan is also a challenge. That's usually been my concern. But - all three colors look great with the right exterior.

I never park an open convertible in direct sun for any time, so the heat question has never been an issue for me. You can always throw a white towel on the seat when you park, unless you're showing the car. For targa top cars, I usually put the top on. Ditto with my ex-SLK, which had red leather that held up nicely and didn't get as hot as black. On my P-car (cabrio), I try to grab some shade when I park and avoid driving top down in midday heat - mostly for health reasons, but also for 'car interior health' reasons.

With regard to exterior, I've had three black cars (Civic, GTI, 911) and yes they are noticeably hotter. But, all my convertibles have had black tops because anything else is just heartbreak trying to keep clean.
