Reviving an old question here - My car has been repainted and it has tape, which I had thought was just due to a lazy painter. But when watching an old rerun of Magnum PI (season #1) I saw quite clearly that behind the driver's door is missing that black line, so maybe it was tape? That or the new 308 supplied by Ferrari already had been damaged & repaired? Or maybe there is something to this factory-applied tape question. My '84 had boxer trim on when I got it....I thought I read that was an original option but maybe not.
But it indeed was, even if it was getting a bit "out of favor" at the time; later, even a small number of 328s had it as "factory made". (So far as I am aware of, there is only ONE 328 GTB identified that might have had it when ordered, alhough todat it is in standard Rosso Corsa above and below the "plimsoll line", as the British would say.) The "Boxer paint" option has been already discussed some times on this very forum, including how the paint and varnish were applied. Rgds
Did your car also come with the rear view mirror and wiper arm delete option that the Magnum p.i cars often did? (Removed to make it easier to see the actors in the car for in car scenes) Using a TV/movie car as an example of how a car should be, can often be a bad idea, especially if it's used for filming for a long period of time. They can, and more often than not, do, live an extremely hard life, and quickly become non-factory spec. From parts being removed for filming, brackets and parts being added for filming, to accident damage and poor quality/quick repairs being carried out, that look fine on screen, but are actually unacceptable in the real World, they are not necessarily the best representation of a perfect example.
My '81 has a black, rubber 'bumper' in that slot all along the car on both sides. Actually protects the doors nicely. No idea what is under it.
I’ve seen a few 308 that has this, it’s a good idea for protecting the doors but of course it’s not original.
I think that's also the case with the black tape. Being in the prestige car industry for over 20 years I know how many cars have been delivered to customers with corrected paint faults and damage unbeknown to them before they took delivery. I would not be surprised if damage during transport to dealerships were "patched" up by the dealer paint shops or third parties before the salesperson unveils the customers untouched new car to them. That includes replacing black paint with tape.
