HP knocked a $100 off the Touchpads before their $99/$149 fire sale.

That looks small no? Is the screen smaller than the HP/IPAD?

Yes; the BB has a 7" screen and the HP/iPad are 9.7" screens.

Found this spec comparison (note, this is old so may not be 100% accurate).

The Touch pad is GSM only?? So if you want to access internet you NEED a plan?

It's the opposite, the touchpad is wifi only. No cellular data connection at all. That chart is wrong in that respect.

No. RIM has pushed "all in" with the operating system in this machine. Their whole company will be switching to this new OS, including their phones, next year. To hold a fire sale would be to admit that the OS is garbage... which it appears to be.

Went to Best Buy yesterday to play with the Playbook. The display model wasn't working and the sales rep said they had been sold out for awhile.

The display model wasn't working at Wal-Mart either but they did have at least 4 in stock. Of the 4 or 5 tablets they carry only the iPad was working though it was behind a case.

One of the things driving the ipad's success is Apple spending on (muscling for?) prime in-store placement and display.

At Wal-Mart all of the other tablets were lined up like a row of glossy pavers and the iPad had a nice end-cap display running a demo. Similar setup at Best Buy too. No wonder folks gravitate to the iPad like moths to light.

I think the reason for the drop is the Amazon tablet which I believe has similar specs for $199 - Engadget (or Gizmodo) did a side-by-side of the Amazon tablet and the Playbook - hard to tell which is which.

QNX is solid, would even say 'very good'. the hardware's fantastic, but there's no apps for the silly thing - hence the firesale. Not even native email yet, and only press releases of Android Apps being able to be ported across in the future.

The Kindle fire is almost the same hardware. It was designed by the same ODM and produced by the same OEM as the BB playbook. Wi-Fi only on the Kindle but also $100 less.
