One thing I have noticed with the 360 is some cars have a blacked out rear panel and some cars don't. Is there a specific meaning to the blacked out panel? Does it have to do with year or options? The reason I ask is I know on some classic American cars...blacking out the rear panel had a very specific meaning. So, is there a meaning to it?

I found these pics online for illustration.

The black coloured rear grill is a challenge grill. It is not a solid panel but is perferated with small holes. The non-challenge grill is colour coded to the car and is solid.

So, on a non-Challenge car it is a solid black grill on the back of the car? Was it available for all the years?

    Challenge Grill not Challenge car.

The Challenge Grill is simply an option and allows better ventilation. It could be ordered from with the car or added aftermarket.

A Challenge car is a purpose built race car, not street legal and never will be.

The Challenge Stradale is a sport version of the Modena and has a Challenge Grill stock, among other changes.

i don't believe there was ever an option to have a solid black panel and I have never seen one. the challenge grill was an option and comes black.

I think you are right. Of course they are really custom so someone could have done a paint to order but I doubt it.

I have a challenge grill on my 360 F1 Spider.

It may help cool the engine (I raise the bonnet every chance I get).

It is harder to clean (dirt gets in the holes but no big deal).

I like the looks of the challenge grill.

    Life is good.
Life is better driving a Ferrari (with a challenge grill)

Challenge grills take ten years off the age of your car. Maybe more.

    Do it!

When you say solid black panel do you mean a non challenge grill in black?

No, I think I meant the challenge grill. I have seen cars with it and without and didn't know what it was.

Is either more desirable or valuable?

That's a question you have to answer through your tastes. Some people love, some hate them. In terms of value, the 360s are starting to get close to a plateau in terms of depreciation so I don't think it will hurt much to not have a Challenge grille.

OK...I think I know what I like more. I really think I like the look of the challenge grille.

But, today if I walked into a dealership and two identical cars were sitting side by side except one had a challenge grille and the other did not...would they be priced the same? I'm trying to get an idea for what features bump up the price a little and what don't.

From what you told us, you are quite a ways away from even purchasing one. I don't mind answering questions here and there, but if aren't close to buying in the next year, please don't start a new thread every day with more beginner questions. Just go over to Ron Tonkin Gran Turismo and spend a couple hours there asking questions. The Salesmen are probably bored anyway, not everday they sell a Ferrari.

Probably will be priced the same. If you have to buy the challenge grill aftermarket it can be had for something like $1500 and it is easy to install.

I would pick options that you like and look for a car with those options. Be sure to prioritize the options you like because you may not fine them all on one car. Some options can be easily added/changed while others, not so much. There aren't that many cars out there in real numbers so the pool is limited. Plus, since everything is in the used market the differential won't be enough to tip the scale (and if it is you probably shouldn't get a Ferrari).

That is what I plan on doing...it's what I have done with cars in the past. I'm just trying to figure out what options I like...and what options can easily be added. Fortunately for me (and probably boring to others), at this point I really think I'm going to look for a red Spider with tan interior and probably an F1 transmission. From what I have seen, this is about as common as they come. :D

But, I do like the challenge grille (or is it grill?) and will probably want that as well. But, if it's easy to buy/add then no problem there. Is the aftermarket part and the factory part the same?

There is an aftermarket version that IMHO looks a bit odd. If you get a car that has everything else you want but for the grill, just get the factory part from Ricambi America.

In addition to what others have said, the grill perforations work in both directions. They let out heat, but also allow reversion dust and dirt to enter the engine compartment, so that compartment won't stay as clean as it would with the solid panel.

I have the solid panel on my silver 360 spider and keep debating whether to get a challenge grill or not. I like the looks of both and laziness in cleaning (not to mention the effort to install) is mainly what's keeping me from making the change.

I understand that I am not going to be purchasing one for some time...that is why I came here. I want to learn. I don't have time to go across town and harass salesmen who probably wouldn't want to talk to me anyway since I'm not interested in buying right now. I appreciate your help in answering my questions so for...but if my beginner questions are annoying you than ignore them (there is actually an ignore feature under User CP where you can type my name and I go away from your screen). This is a public forum and my interests are just as valid as the next person's. I will post as I please until a mod or admin tells me otherwise.
