It's my understanding that the '78 308 is painted with lacquer. If that's the case (and living in California) what options are there for blending? Is the only solution to clear the whole car?

You need to discuss with a specialist.

Traditionally, you don't clear over laquer, you compound it to a new gloss.

The most common error is to respray over it with a modern system without adequate sealer. That results in a reaction that crazes the new coat.

Can you google Regalia Concours Restoration?
He is a our smartest member when it come to paint systems...

I used a wise old guy who always said:
"Some cars need a bare metal respray, but THIS is not one of them!"

    Long retired, sadly...

Seems to be just down the road from me, thanks, I'll look him up.

I have worked a lot with lacquer, but never tried to blend a repair on a lacquer car with a modern paint system. The beauty of lacquer for repairs is the burn in of new coats to old. No idea if there is a new paint system that works, what's involved, or if compatible products are available outside of California. I just had a 356 resprayed and had to get the paint from Nevada. I'm not sure a compatible product is available even there.

I am correct that a '78 308 would originally be painted with lacquer?

    That's great news!

    Yes, we have laquer systems.

The whole thing with the EPA regs relates to the QUANTITY you are using.
They were on to my old guy, even out in the country, on his emissions.

He said there was a shop down the road, that would spray one body panel at a time!

    Mike will know....

That's why my gallon of sanding sealer is 4 quart containers now...

There's a paint vendor in Reno, NV that still does lacquer. I had them match my 40 year-old paint and they got it spot on. I know where they are, but I forgot the name and the exact address. I'll try to find it.

Don't come up this weekend. The Street Vibrations motorcycle gathering is in town and the line is out the door and around the block. They are mixing a lot of quarts of custom colors.
