   Does anyone know about the original surface of the subject item? Mine looks dirty mat black, but it is probably supposed to be wrinkle finish like the cam covers.

   Yes, it is wrinkle finish as the covers are. What you have to watch for is the inside of the can rusts and the bits of rust clog the drain hole at the bottom.
   
   I made myself a new one out of aluminum.
