I was wondering what the pupose for the blow-by system is.Does it require regular maintainence-cleaning?How do you know if it is blocked up?What are the symptoms? How do you clean it or is it a a replaceable item. Thanks in advance.PS:The car is a 308gt4.

The crankcase emission control system is "closed", the oil vapors from the engine heads pass through a separator as shown in your picture.

The system should be cleaned every 20,000 km

They collect and condense engine breathing vapours, and drain them back into the sump rather than swallow them whole in the air box.

If the car is used regularly, they require no major maintenance other than washing, however when left to stand they can go rusty inside. This then leads to flakes of the powder coating dropping down and blocking the drain return pipe to sump outlet.

The only way to fix this is to cut it open and clean it all out, then weld it back together again, or replace it.

If it gets partially blocked, the oil can build up until it gets consumed in great gulps into the air box and looks like your engine has expired.

Wash through with a degreasing agent and don't forget to check and clean the flame arrestor in the airbox
