I have a 1994 348 Spider and i am having some type of power surge. My A/C blows nice and cold but after a very small time running my fusible link blows out. No matter what size I use it blows out. It's been suggested to me that although my system is blowing cold and doing what it is suppose to my compressor should be changed that it is drawing to much power. Is this accurate or could it be something different.

    Thanks, Alan

Why the compressor? It's run by the ENGINE, not an electric motor. The only electrical thing on the compressor (besides sensors) is the clutch and that has a minimal draw.

Whenever electrical problems are encountered on a low voltage application (12-24v), always assume it's a grounding problem first. Nine times out of ten, it's a bad ground or a ground with corrosion, a bad connector to a ground or something along those lines. Blown fuses indicate too much current (amps) flowing through the wire. Generally, that's because the voltage is lower due to a poor ground.

I had my A/C blower circuit converted to a breaker instead of a fuse when I first got it back in 2005 or so. Tim Stanford (famed mechanic) recommended it as the current draw is supposedly close to the limit for a regular fuse. He also changed out the door wiring from the often broken pin system to a through wired setup. Fast windows!

Lets not rule out the actual blower...I can see that having an effect, even more so than the compressor. You may be associating it with the A/C due to the time of year, but could be something completely different.

The compressor clutch is more then likely the problem. If you want to isolate it, unplug the compressor clutch and run the climate control. If the fuse no longer pops..you have found your problem.
