Saw the Blue Angels today at Pensacola Beach, shot a few quick clips with my iPhone and thought I'd share. The weather was very iffy and the entire civilian portion of the show was canceled. At the last moment the Blues announced they would go. The area was covered in scattered thunderstorms, you can see the areas of cloud and rain in the video. Made for a great looking, dramatic backdrop. If you're ever in the area in mid July, this is a fantastic show. 250-300,000 folks on the beach, and hundreds (thousands?) of boats anchored in the bay watching the show.

That is positively the worst-looking weather I've ever seen a jet demo team perform in. Obviously it was the "low" show, but considering how hard the wind seemed to be blowing at the surface, it probably took some guts to fly the F-18s in tight formation.

As for Fat Albert, that weather would have been no sweat; after all, they fly C-130s into hurricanes, don't they?

Incidentally, one of the first demo team shows I ever saw was in a similar environment (but under much nicer skies): the Thunderbirds, flying F-100s, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, I'm guessing around 1965 or so.

Thanks for posting the video link.

Funny thing about that.... The standard weather avoidance criteria applies when they are flying to/from a hurricane penetration mission.

Kudos for them trying to put on the best show they could for their "home" crowd.

If you look on the website you can find when they have practices at the base in Pensacola.
They are early in the morning. When i went there was only maybe 1,000 people there. Got a front row center view of the same show they put on everywhere. Afterwards you could meet the pilots.

Afterwards the Naval Air Museum is right there- great place to go.
Lots of great planes. Oddly had an ME-262 there which i had never seen before.

Yes. If you really want to SEE a show, the "practices" are the way to go. We have been to a few over the years, and enjoyed every one. The best part was the elderly vets they have who volunteer at the museum, who narrate the practices and give a lot of interesting inside info during the show. You may also be able to sneak a peak inside the hangar they use for restoration of aircraft for the museum. Lots of cool stuff going on in there!

The museum there is just simply world class. Not to be missed by any aviation buff.
