Why? The lead driver would have to start overtaking the back markers or fall into the clutch of the pursuiers.
At Monaco, one could say it would spice to the race which is often processional.
With the grid penalties, we have seen that good drivers with the best cars have no problem overtaking half the field in the first quarter of a GP.
Witness how quickly Hamilton, Ricciado, Vettel and others make their way to the front when starting from the bottom of the grid.
So what would be the problem for any of these hot-shots to lap Ericsson, Hartley and the other also-runs without the help of blue flags?
I think it should be tried.
The blue flag gives too much entitlement to the top 6 drivers, IMO.

And likely many millions of viewers don't understand the rather opaque rules in F1 either.

I've been around the sport for 30 years and still find elements of the rules bewildering, including this one.

Little wonder TV viewing figures have been in steep decline since 2008.

In this instance TV viewers witness seven blue flags being shown for Ocon, but apparently they don't apply.

    Opaque BS.

Once cars are lapped, why not classify them and take them out of the race. Who is really watching to see a ****ty Williams shuffle around, or whether a toro Rosso is going to be last or 17th. No one cares. Let them have a ten car mini race on their own out the way to decide the lower places, but out of the way of the real race.

Blue flags are there for a reason. The rules are there to state if you want to unlap yourself, don’t interfere with the leaders. If the drivers cannot understand that, park them up, they add nothing to the show once the race is underway and has run the first few laps. They shouldn’t be allowed to determine a race winner
