I would prefer to use my laptop or ipad for the benefit of a larger screen, especially when
    viewing live data graphs.

Any recommendation for a Ferrari compatible high quality bluetooth reader?

What do you get for $119 that you don't get for $10? Does Bluedriver give you live sensor data?

Yes. I've used it on a couple of cars and it works pretty well for basic stuff. It doesn't recognize my 355 by VIN but still works OK. I mainly use it to check that all emissions monitors are set before taking a car in for a smog check.

It does allow you to livestream data (basically any input supported by the vehicle) and also offers a fairly useful freeze frame picture of all sensors at the time a code is stored. I think you have to have the ODBII adapter plugged in when the code is actually triggered for this to work. For more common makes/models it does have a pretty robust user base and offers suggested fixes. I've never used any of this but it's available.

Does it acknowledge Ferrari as a make and 355 as a model? My current unit does not support any Ferrari

Sort of, it scans the VIN but doesn't automatically recognize the vehicle. But you can simply tell it to continue and it will function fine without knowing this.

I think you can go ahead and tell it the make/model and save this, but I have never bothered as I am not doing much other than checking readiness monitors.

Here is what it officially says about the 355:
