    What does everyone think of these cars? Any reliability issues? I found one locally (1971 model) for 3500. Any thoughts?

    I don't know a lot of details about them, but I've heard they're an absolute joy to drive. My Dad had one back in 1970 and really treasured it. Unfortunately, a suicidal deer finished it off head-on at 60 mph.

    I've heard that the biggest thing you have to watch for is the rust -- 2002s are said to be prone to some wicked rustout, often in structural areas. The little bit I've looked at these Bimmers, the ones in that $3500 tend to be in that rougher condition. But hey, check it out. Only one way to find out.

    Yes, rust is a real big issue with 2002s. They are very simple cars so you can work on them yourself. There are also a lot of parts around.
