    I am looking at getting a e36 3 series and what to see if anyone knew if the engine is an interference engine. Thanks for any info.

    Yep. Had 4 of 'em, never a problem, but E36 M3's and poor drivers/shifters/worn tranny bushings mean missed shifts and valves frenching the pistons.

    The M50 (and derivatives) engine used in the E36 is an interference engine, however, it uses a timing chain, not a belt. Unless the chain tensioner goes bad, you shouldn't have to worry about it.

    They're nice cars, if the history looks good and a mechanic checks it out, then it should be ok. They are reliable motors when looked after.
