Since the F-chat crowds are experts on everything automotive, I have a question. A friend of mine has a 2001 BMW 325I that developed a slow fluid leak. After taking it to the BMW dealership, they diagnosed it as a leaking torque converter. Their estimate for repairs was above $4000!!! Supposedly the torque converter needs to be repaired (replaced?) and the transmission should also be rebuilt at the same time. Sounds overly expensive to me. Since I know nothing about BMWs, I am wondering if pulling a transmission and torque converter means PULLING the entire engine out of the car as well??? HORRORS if this is true.
The car runs fine. But leaking fluid is a pain. I think the dealership is smelling a potential FLEECING. Any ideas on the real deal concerning the costs of such a repair?

This does not make much sense to me. The torque cnnverter should be sealed inside the transimission housing if I am not mistaken. So even if you had a bad torque converter (which woudl usually lead to symptoms of a worn clutch), it should not cause fluid to leak out of the main tranismisson housing.

As far as removing the entire engine with the tranismission. I highly doubt it. They will most likely dissconect it at the rear main and change from underneath the vehicle. Hope this helps and please keep us updated.

Torque converters dont leak on these but the seal where the converter enters the trans will, its not a big job and the engine dose not have to be removed, dose seem expensive quote to me,
