Ok, this may seem long winded and is probably going to be a pointless post, but here goes. Several years ago I was driving through Germany when I happened to pass a car burning on the side of the road. It was almost completely ablaze and there were people working on it. So, the situation appeared to be as under control as it could have been. There was also heavy traffic and when I saw what was going on I was too far over to have stopped and helped. The car was a BMW M1. I immediately recognized it as such. It was, and still is, the only one I have ever seen in person. I did not really realize just how rare those things are... I am thinking this was in the 2006-2008 time frame roughly, but is there any way to ever figure out what became of that car?? Anyone have a clue?? Just random, but I happened to be thinking about the M1 earlier today and that sprang to mind. PDG
when i was a teenager, in london, i remember driving past an elderly gentleman who'd dropped his groceries, and all the eggs had cracked, and the yolks were running down the pavement... does anyone know what happened to the yolks?
Hey, I know its a long shot, but those cars are pretty rare, just wondered if someone knew of it. The eggs fried by the way.... PDG
you have to love the fact when you have a car in the garage that you always wanted!! its not the money part of it, just that YOU have it! sweet car, and congrats..
Most excellent!!! I have been fascinated with them for years and that one has still, to date, been the only one I have ever seen. I have seen more ORIGINAL GTOs than I have M1s!!! Care to post photos of yours?? I would LOVE to see it!!! PDG
Phil - sounds like a dog's breakfast.....I think that he dropped the eggs because he was distracted by a M1 at full tilt!
Random, maybe. But M1 sightings are pretty random, and rare. When I drive mine across country, she draws losts of attention. If it was a Red M1, in Sept, 2009, then it was me! Image Unavailable, Please Login
What a spectacular car!!! Glad I started this thread just for that photo!!! I am also honored that TWO of your current four posts are in this thread!!! I hope to see you around some more - just post more photos of that stunner!!!! Thank you!!! And unfortunately, no the one I saw was in Germany and it was before 2009. I would love to see yours though!!! PDG

i can't rival mike's matched luggage set! (but my car is on the cover of motortrend classic this month-they have a big article on the m1!) Image Unavailable, Please Login
I was beginning to think the M1 had almost been forgotten but it is nice to see there are still a few M1 junkies. When the M1 was introduced and presented in the car mags I drooled, the M1 will always hold a special place in my heart. Great thread! This picture imho is truelly a work of art. Congrats PhilT!! I LOVE Motortrend Classic - they even carry it here in Afghanistan at the PX so I will get a copy!! That photo AND that engine bay are simply stellar!!! Nicely done!!! We could make this the Post your Photo of your M1 thread!!!! PDG
Yes, the M1 came with a first aid kit and warning triangle (both can be seen in the photo). They are neatly packaged in two pouches on the spare tire cover. The exquisite tool roll was also stock and sits in a recessed compartment under the spare tire. Now the luggage was an expensive option. They luggage was specially made by Louis Vuitton. List price for the pieces you see was approx $1500 in 1980!
Hello Mike; The "L.V." luggage with inflation adjustment for $1,500.00 in 1980 would be $4,656.00 in 2012, add to that the "Rarity Factor", & you have quite an expensive & virtually unobtainable M1 option. Interesting to note BMW had a "First Aid Kit" option....did they have a fire extinguisher option?....Mark
First Aid Kits have been options on BMWs since at least 1966 as they appear in the accessory catalog. I have an original with my 1972 E9 and 1974 tii. Now this is not your CVS first aid kit. I think you could perform minor surgery. There is also lots of "white powder" in the kit that I hope I never have to explain to a state trooper!
When you ordered the M1 first aid kit, did you also get the Peruvian "marching powder" option?!....remember it was the "80's"!!!....Mark
Why don´t you ask the German BMW M1 club? www.bmw-m1-club.org Chances are they know this incident and perhaps even the car. This German site has tons of M1 photos: http://tinyurl.com/M1-photos
How many other BMW's had rear engine, cockpit forward for sale to the public street cars ? I saw one of these in Los Angeles years ago. I never knew them to build anything other than front engine. I thought it to be some kind of Ferrari or Lamborghini at first glance.
The M1 was the only mid-engined production car. I find it funny that BMW states "It was the only mid-engined BMW to be mass produced" if you can call a total of 456 "mass produced" lol.
