I have a question about high mileage BMWs.. Does really high mileage effect higher end cars to where they're undriveable? I've found a great looking 2004 M3 in a stunning blue at a great price, but it has 190k on the odometer. What kind of problems can be expected out of a car like this? Car in question http://atlanta.craigslist.org/nat/cto/2837445078.html Thanks in advance! - Luke Not seriously looking to purchase it, but just wondering how high miles hurt this car. At least its been thoroughly enjoyed!
Honestly, they are just like any car, as long as they are well maintained throughout their life they can last as long as anything else. The problem with higher-end cars (BMW, MBZ) is a lot of people get them just for the status, and when something needs repaired they freak out at the cost, and just let it go. I have seen BMW's come in the shop with over 200K miles that are like new, but I've also seen them with 50K miles that you couldn't pay me to take. That's why it's always good to get a PPI. That $100 could save you thousands.
As mini_ferrari said, it's all about the maintenance history. I wouldn't necessarily be turned off of that particular e46 m3, especially since it is a 1-owner adult-driven car (according to the ad, at least). But with those kind of miles, pretty much all of the mounts and bushings will need to be replaced (if they haven't been already). (ie rear trailing arm bushings, control arm bushings, tranny, motor, and diff mounts, subframe bushings, etc.) Another weak point of the car is the cooling system. If he truly is the original owner and he has maintenance records, it could be a good buy. As always, if you get serious about it, take it for a PPI. There are a number of very good independant BMW shops in the Atlanta area--feel free to PM me and I can recommend one based on where you live.
