BMW has announced that it will keep the Sauber name in F1. This has got please Peter since he still retains a 20% share. I think it's a terrific thing they're doing. It will be interesting to see how long it stays this way before it changes to just BMW, which I think is inevitable.

Weird that they only announce this now.

The new merchandise line was presented more than a week ago and the name was already fixed albeit that it was officially "covered" on the presentation photos.

It certainly is a nice thing for Peter Sauber and I agree it will eventually go away.

I'm still awaiting the official driver lineup. Rumors continue that Jacques is not on it and will get a handsome payout to leave.

I believe the hold up with HK is that Flav right now is only willing to loan him for 1 year. BMW Sauber want him for 2 years.

Why the hell do they want to get of JV so bad anyway? I would love to see what he can do one more year on board, if he doesn't do well than drop him.

I agree. BMW is still in a building up phase and has not much to loose and he is an experienced driver by all accounts.

I'm happy to see Kovalainen in F1, but would rather not see that at the expense of an ex Champion. The end of the field is full of people who could get booted as far as I'm concerned.

If JV drives at BMW Sauber, it is bacause his contract was deemed valid and would be too expensive to be bought out.

Button should take some pointers from JV in the management department. I am impressed that JVs contract would be strong enough to transfer across a nearly complete buyout of the team by BMW.

JV has a contract with Sauber.

the new team is called BMW Sauber..... lets say they didnt make it easier for themselves to break contract with JV.

but either way, it would cost what? 3m to run him, and 15m to get rid of him........

    tought call

anyways Heki has to get broken in into f1, thats what flavio wants. so he wont really give anything to bmw other than just learn, while it would be the opposite with JV.

I just want to know whether he races next year or not!??! im tired of this offseason circus lol

I personally think it is a joke that JV is being written off so badly. True his final year at BAR was quite disappointing, but I think that had to do with the Dave Richards's "Jenson is my boy". He started off poorly at Sauber but has improved much throughout the season. I think given a fair car he will do fine, I certainly don't rate him below, DC, Fischella, RS, etc.

Classy move. Peter Sauber deserves to have the reccognition. I don't think this will bind them to JVil, F1 contracts are not worth the paper they are printed on.

It's not that JV has had a bad year... it's that he only ever had one good year. I have never met another driver who rested on his laurels more than JV. The only reason he is still in F1 is charity. We all know Bernie had a lot to do with him constantly getting seats here and there and he has never failed to disappoint. He was given multiple opportunities on a silver platter and has f-ed up every single one of them.

The only constant is there is a neverending trail of JV apologists making up excuses as to why he didnt do well. These excuses range from "he is new to the car" to "team management is out to get him" to "he was taken out of the race by another driver" to "he was just unlucky" and more. It reminds me of when I used to race - everyone had an excuse as to why they didnt do well, the tires, motor, suspension, fatigue, or whatever. There was ALWAYS an excuse. If all the excuses were factors and they hadnt happened, then these drivers would be unbelieveably fast. Yet, even when things DID go their way, they still didnt win. Just like JV.

If I were BMW, I would sure as hell get rid of JV. He contributes nothing to the team except bad finishes and a pompous attitude. JV is reknowned for being an abysmal "development" driver. He wants to show up, have a perfect car, race, and go home without talking to anyone or doing anything else. Conversely, Michael Schumacher will call up Todt on the weekend during vacation with some new idea about the car that may gain a bit of speed. JV is an impediment to progress, not a contributor. They need to prune his dead weight off the tree so they can focus on new talent.

Getting rid of JV in favor of HK would be a HUUUUUGE boost to the team. The employees will be invigorated having someone new and fast, rather than working their butts off for someone who just whines and blames the developers for every problem. I would not buy out JV's contract if it came to that - I would keep paying it and make him be the b!tch that stands behind the fuel guy and holds the hose. If he really was any kind of team player, he would be happy to help out the team. But we all know he'd run to the press and whine how he is an ex-champ (read: has been) and deserves more.

    Today's Autosprint:

Briatore: "Kovalainen is the future of F1, we expect a lot from him and it is not true that he will race for Sauber in 2006. Kovalainen will be our test driver and for him it is planned the same formation as Fernando Alonso. In 2007 he will race for sure, I don't know yet if for Renault or in another team"
