Are there various patterns for a Boano transmission?

I hear they were reverse pattern - but have seen pics of shift patterns normal .

    Any thoughts or actual experience??

Yes, some cars have a "reverse" shift pattern.

There are some with the standard pattern. I have never been able to determine any sequence as to which cars had which pattern. Reverse pattern means that:

    3 1 R
    4 2

So to be clear - the standard pattern we are taking about for Boano is...

    R 1 3

Based on my limited experience with them, most were reversed pattern.

Is there a discernible point in the production sequence when the change took place?

Ed: Some Boano/Ellena cars have reverse to the right of 3rd.

375+: Not that I could ever determine.

yes i have a client car - 0447 alum bodied boano and the shift pattern has the R to the right of the 3rd gear
    1 3 r
    2 4

however i have seen a shift plaque in another boano with the R to the left of the 1.

and it seems that the 1-2 in some cases is revers of the 3-4.

    confusing to say the least

    ok...

    Here comes the big question...

    Why?

Why did they build them with a

    3 1 R
    4 2

    Pattern?

Was it right hand drive cars and working the gear shift away from you like in a LHD car?

    Sorry for the dumb question

That's the same pattern as a Type 35 Bugatti. Although the wheel is on the right, the shift lever is outside the car (to the right of the wheel), so that's another instance of the 'reverse' pattern.
A long-winded way of saying I don't think the pattern is to compensate for a car being RHD.

Sorry but the Bugatti T35 shift pattern is R 2 4
    1 3

Which is a different version of 'reverse'

Of course you are correct, Bart.
I drove 4863 once on a circuit in the early 2000's for a few touring laps. We were on the course with 'modern' (1960s) race cars at the same time and I had a lot of information going through my small brain housing unit in those moments.

I do remember the pattern being 'reversed' but the actual pattern was that which you stated above.

Hi! My car #0635 has also a reverse pattern 3-4-1-2. All oanos I have seen (not that many...) had that pattern. Doesn not mean they all have it...

The one we had in the Philadelphia area in the early eighties had a reverse gear box.
