Go to a Duke/Carolina basketball game at Cameron...the Duke student body has taken rival harassment to a level that Red Sox/Yankee fans could only dream of.
Beyond some "crossing the line moments" over the years, the Duke students are clever AND very effective in their "antics".

To be fair, I don´t thing this crap is new or that it came with the "Drive to Survive" horde or anything like that. There was a Senna ragdoll hung by the neck at the Silverstone grandstands in 1992.

I'll cheer a rival's crash out/spin out/failure, etc., but only when they appear unharmed. I don't see anything wrong with that. I never want to see anything happen to any driver.

Personally, I have always felt booing was low-rent but being an American and a fan of most American sports it is common and I guess it allows the crowd/fans to feel they are part of the event they are paying $$ to attend so for the most part ok with it. As far as cheering crashes in motorsport I also feel that is low rent (and would like to think F1 is above-average from a "class" standpoint versus NASCAR for example) but I guess I understand cheering a minor crash that takes out a competitor but only once it is known/visible that the driver is ok.

For me personally, I can enjoy attending a sporting event without "booing" and feel/hope my driver/team can win the race without other drivers/teams crashing - but I am obviously the minority.

I guess these days if people can derive joy and excitement booing/cheering to live vicariously through their heroes and sporting events that is probably the least of our problems.

That said, I would pimp-slap someone around me who cheered a crash where the driver was hurt or his/her condition unknown.

    Cheers :)

Is a non-applause equivalent to booing?

No - Non-applause is a classy move / booing makes you sound/act like your family tree is a trunk and your house is mobile but your car is not :)

Booing indicates disapproval. Applause indicates approval. Not doing either indicates nothing.

Do you guys get mad at people who frown, too?

No problem with booing, no problem with cheering on minor spins/crashes (where it's obvious nobody is hurt) - serious crashes - that's not cool.

    1989 Silverstone GP.

After a couple of laps Senna spun off from the lead at Becketts and terminally beached himself in the gravel without hitting any walls.

As he got out of the car right in front of my Swedish girlfriend and I everybody cheered... because he had been dominating too much. People were fed up with him winning. She has never seen any racing before and was shocked; she said they can't do that!

It was a faulty gearlinkage in both McLaren's but Prost supremely smooth, drove around the problem and won...

Right. The applause occurred because the crowd knew there would be something different to behold at the end of the race.

Hilarious, we are frankly appalled at your condescension, and your poor spelling when talking up to people from your low perch:)
