This book is relatively new(June I think) and I've just finished reading it. If you like poker and business, you will probably really like this book. It's about Texas billionaire banker Andy Beal and his desire to beat the World's Best at poker in 2003 and 04. I don't want to give away the story for those who havent kept up with him but needless to say, the man has become a legened in the poker world and this book just helped solidify it. It's a very well told story/description on what all Beal did and the effects it had on some parts of his life and the players he came into contact with. It also gives a nice summary on how Beal became successful in business as well and a decent insight on to the type of person he actually is(low key and to himself). I highly recommend it for anyone in need of some easy reading.

And kind of related: I have a feeling that at least someone here has met Mr. Beal? Is he as down to earth and modest as the book would make him seem? He seems like he'd a pretty nice guy to be around.

Haven't read the book yet, but I do have insight into the game that was played and the follow-up that was meant to happen (but probably won't) as I am an avid poker player. He (Andy) is a very good poker player but I have to say not as great as he makes himself out to be. The fact is he wants to play limit hold'em at $100,000/$200,0000 which is too much for your average poker pro to play as a single pot at that level could be several million. He makes a claim that if Doyle Brunson and his team wont play him for that amount then they are obviously afraid which is and isn't true at the same time. Fact is there is varince in poker and you will have nights where the cards are not going your way, problem is playing at those levels that could wipe out all the pros in one bad night. Where as if he has a bad night it is a drop in the bucket for him. If he feels that he is such a great player then he should sit down at the "big game" in Vegas for awhile with Doyle Brunson, Jenneifer Harmann, Phil Ivey, Chuao Chiang (sp?) and others and see how he does.

As far as what I have heard of him he seems to be alright when he isn't talking about poker. He has several times though come off as a pompous ass in need of a ***** smacking in Cardplayer Magazine and other places trying to call the pro's out saying that they are scared to play them. So, again if feels that good he should take his ass to the Bellagio and play in the "big game" $4,000/$8,000 limit mixed games LHE, NLHE, PLO, PLO8, 7Stud, Stud high/lo, 2-7 triple draw etc......

After all even I a decent player could make a Doyle or Phil think twice about playing me when the limits are that high. Variance is a *****.
