    Hi Ivan,

You may find some usefull information on the Alfa Montreal website. I think the Montreal share the ignition system with the Khamsin. Look under the "Ignition units" chapter at The Alfa Romeo Montreal Website

I understand the components used at the time was simple, but some of them is hard to source now. One of the common problems is the capacitors drying out, if I understand correctly.

The owner of my former Montreal had the system rebuilt, and the guy that made the repair was an expert on custom electric guitar equipment. He is building boxes that had the classic old sound using old style electronic components, and he was able to source the components needed to repair the Bosch units for the Montreal.

    Best regards
    Marius

    Hi Marius,

I am familiar with the excellent Alfa Montreal website as I also own one (fun car!). It is the only other car I know that uses the same identical Bosch part numbers as the Ghibli for the CDi box and coils .... except the Montreal has two of these CDi boxes. The Khamsin system is similar except the Khamsin has a breakerless ignition.

    Hello enthustiasts,
anyone can help with the wiring of the Bosch CDI box on my 68 Mexico. My car was updated with the system by the factory in the early 70's. The later Mexico came with CDI box as standard.

    Bosch CDI box : 0 227 200 002 with 3 pins, A - B - C
    Bosch coil : 0 221 120 003
    Smiths rev counter

If have found different two schematics :

The first comes from Ivan website. The original Maserati file.

The second is different but seems standard on Porsche, Alfa Montreal etc...

Which one should I chose ?

The one in the bottom is correct:

A = output to terminal 15 of coil
    B = +12V switch (from ignition switch)
C = trigger signal from distributor points

A better solution is to get rid of the Bosch box and dual points and install a Pertronix ignitor and coil. The ignitor fits inside the distributor and you can put Bosch decals on the Petronix coil and few will know the difference. Remember that the Bosch box is now 50+ years old and the components are bound to fail. My Ghibli's Bosch box failed during a 1,600 mile rally. Luckily the car ran okay with a standard points/coil setup, but it took several hours in a parking lot to figure out what was wrong .... not fun.

Thank you Ivan, do I need the resistance between A and terminal 15 of coil ? You are probably right about the Petronix system, my goal is to run the car with the old system for the first outings. I know that the old system is not on the top regarding reliability.

My Ghibli did not have the resistor.

I can recommend the Thor ignition system for the Maserati V8s if you want an alternative for the Pertronix system, it is running very nicely on mine and some other Maseratis i know of...
