I was looking at the replacement fuel pump that was in the trunk of my car, and I'm not 100% it is the right pump for my setup.

Can anyone give me some tech background on the dual fuel filter setup and if the pumps are different from the single fuel filter setup?

Also, anyone have the part # handy for a Bosch fuel pump that works with the dual filter setup?

    Thanks!

    Hi Shane,

I have a spare pump out of an 81 308 around here someplace. I'll try to dig it out and take a pic.

I have an '81 and can get you the Bosch part number tonight.

Can get a brand new OEM fuel pump too directly from Bosch if you are interested.

Shane -- You don't need to start a new thread with every post. It would be far better IMO to have all of your recent prior posts in a single thread because they all relate to you finding, and fixing, a fuel delivery problem on a 2-valve i. <rant off ;)>

It's not the filter set-up that makes the difference in the fuel pumps. When Bosch first introduced the CIS system they built the (non-replaceable) check valve into the fuel pump (probably in an effort to minimize the number of parts) -- call this the "internal check valve fuel pump". Later on, they figured out that the failure rate of the check valve far exceeded the failure rate of the electric motor and pump head so they changed the check valve to a separately replaceable item that screws into the pump -- call this the "external check valve fuel pump". The "problem" is that the internal check valve fuel pump is no longer made, so it must be replaced by the external check valve type fuel pump (unless you find a 30-year old NOS pump) -- this requires some slightly different fittings/hose to connect from the external check valve to the accumulator so you'll probably get to meet/contact/talk with Larry Fletcher (fletch62).

This is not a problem for only your model. Any CIS injected F from the 1980~1983 timeframe has this same issue so we've come across it many times. Here's a good thread from Newman updating his BBi512 for the same issue that has pictures of both types of fuel pumps and the plumbing changes needed:

Well, I'm finally back in the CONUS, and I took the afternoon to take out my fuel pump/accumulator assembly for replacement.

Pretty straight forward without any issues. In fact, the 308 is a pleasure to work on.

So, that brings me to my question.

My car has the dual setup fuel filters and currently has Mahle KL 19 fuel filters attached.

Does anyone know the cross reference for part numbers for Bosch, Puralator, etc.?

And, does anyone have any recommendations on where to buy Mahle KL 19 or other correct filters for the dual setup?

Has anyone used the mahle KL 19 filters even?

I have googled for a while now and nothing is coming up.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I did find this page, which seems to have the correct cross reference filter numbers. Hmmmm.

I'm a little fussy re brands I install on my car. I probably wouldn't chance the really cheap filters. Might as well go with Bosch. But if you need one tonight, I'm sure you can pick up a Fram G3744, Purolator F64857 or similar at Advance Auto or O'Reilly.

I believe those Mahle are a quasi-equivalent substitution, but that the early Bosch filter (F PN 115738) is 0450905203 (or Bosch USA 71051):

Here's a photo previously posted by someone showing the (slightly smaller) Bosch compared to (maybe another?) Mahle:

There are a bunch of near equivalents with slightly different OD and/or length (Bosch 71047, Napa 3153, Baldwin BF1177) but as long as it fits in the loop clamp and has the right inlet and outlet threads they all sort of work.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I'm gonna go with the Bosch 0 450 905 203. I trust that brand boy does this car need some fuel filtering.

Speaking of which, has anyone ever put an additional inline fuel filter between the tank and the fuel pump?

The reason I ask, is it seems like the pump could use some temporary protection while my fuel system continues to get cleaned.

I opened up the fuel pump and found it was completely clogged with crap from my tank, so I'm assuming that's why it failed. Now, I've drained both tanks, and have run some compressed air through them and some serious crap came out. I'm also going to have to replace the level sender since it seems to be stuck and full of crap also.

Just thinking putting in a quick filter may not hurt for awhile.

I finished putting the new birdman fuse kit, fuel pump, fuel accumulator and fuel filters in my car today and it fired right up! Amazing to here that thing run since the previous owner had it sitting in storage for over 5 years!

Thank you to everyone who helped me diagnose the fuel system issues. This is a great group!

Now, time to get the belts done so I don't bend a valve.
