Can I get some overall restaurant recs around the Boston U area? Also, any others that are absolute musts if you're coming to Boston. I'd like to try some good mom 'n pop, non chain, hole in the wall type places. Searched the archives and the steak thread but would like to get more info on specific seafood and Italian places, in central Boston (forgive my geographic ignorance). gracie
BigAL, For Italian in the north end, Il Panino (sit down) or Il Panino Express (across the street from Il Panino) for lunch or quick food are my two favorites. The alfredo is consistently the best I've ever had. Birdman
It all depends on the atmostsphere and food you are looking for. Il Panino's are really nice and consisent. But Strega is has great food and what atmostsphere! If you go on Tuesday nights - they have Street Magic singing - 5 guys from the North End that have been singing since they were teens - If you like fish - then Mare is the place to go - Great fish and a nice wine selection. Their menu changes every night. A little hidden gem is Piccolo Nido on North St - if you go there tell them Therese and Bosco sent you - Pino will take good care of you. If you'd like old fashion Italian dining then La Summa on Fleet St - the owner does the cooking, a life long resident. Also let them know we sent you - and they will take care of you. Want a casual meal with a fun bar atmostsphere then Artu's on Prince St. Those are just a few of my favorites - living here in the North End - and knowing most of the owners and eating out about once a week - I can tell you about most of them. Feel free to email me any questions. Ciao, Therese
Being new to the area I am unfamiliar with the "North End". I remember it from the Prince spaghetti commercials I saw as a kid. How does one get to this culinary epicenter? David
I went to BU, I love Boston its my 2nd fave city in the US after Miami As for Musts you have to go to Quincy Market, its a great 18th C building that has been restored & is full of restaurants & shops Newbury St is very nice & has lots of great restaurants & stores Theres a Cheesecake Factory under the Sheraton hotel, I love that restaurant Let me know if you ever make it to Miami Have fun
I highly reccomend that you checkout Mistral, the food and service is absolutely amazing. Not to mention all the wait staff is smoking hot lol. But they have amazing french inspired cuisine. Its probably one of most popular places for younger peeps in beantown.
imo, fwiw, i think No. 9 Park is perhaps the finest restaurant in the city. if you have an evening (and wallet) to kill, get the full tasting menu with pairings (figure 4 to 5 hours for dinner). i've had more, consistently-amazing meals there than any other restaurant in the city. the bar has some really impressive unique drinks too. imo/ime, it makes places like Excelsior, Radius, Clio, Olive's, etc. look like amateurs. i guess it's possible that Aujord'hui or L'Espalier could match it, but i really don't dig the overly formal vibes at either, so they never really make it to the top of the "gotta go" list. doody.
Hey David, The North End is an area in Boston between Rte 93 and the waterfront, north of the aquarium and kinda south of the Boston Garden (Fleet Center, Banknorth center, whatever they call it now). It's kinda hard to describe. Easiest way to get there is to get directions to the New England Aquarium, then pass the aquarium (keeping it on the right), just after the Marriott is Commercial street on the right which is on the perimeter of the north end. Good luck parking!! There is a parking garage in there somewhere. Birdman
We have a great little Italian place in Mansfield, Trattoria Della Nonna, 508-339-5432, If you are ever down this way, its worth the visit.
Therese, Went to La Summa last night-WONDERFUL and the bread! I had to stop myself from filling up on wine and bread and olive oil! It was even more appealing as it wasn't on the main drag. I was with a group of people who started peeling off to the main ones on Hanover St. I kept walking and a friend kept saying "where you going?" I told him, "Trust me". I wasn't entirely sure to its exact location, just on Fleet St. Eventually found it and your rec was spot on, gracie!
you have somebody thats interviewing at BU ? Boston is a great college town If you are still in Boston past July 17 why dont you come down to CT sometime, about 3 hrs drive SW & I'll give you a ride in the Slutmobile
I am So happy you enjoyed yourself!! I always feel comfortable recommending La Summas - Barbara, who owns it is a dear friend and is in the kitchen cooking her grandmothers recipes! And she lives across the street, one of the few North End owned and operated Italian Restuarants! Next time tell Barbara I sent you! She'll treat you extra special! Enjoy the weekend! Ciao, Therese
here for a three week training session at BU. They felt Big Al needed an attitude adjustment, you friggin' believe them monkeys? I will be and if my schedule cooperates, I'll see about swinging by for a ride the the king of all Fs....the Slutmobile! I certainly will and thanks again for a great rec!
