    What type of food are you in the mood for. There are many very good restaurants. There are many that are on the top of my list.

    Theres a great restaurant called Sel De La Terre..a french bistro..its reasonable but alittle on the pricy side..maybe $15-25 per not including drinks for dinner..and obviously less for lunch. Great Papas las frites (french fries)
    They have great wine tasting nights also!

    Located next to the NE Aquarium and near Fannuel Hall

    Number is 1.617.227.1820

    len - you'll get more useful responses if you share more data. "italian or american" doesn't narrow it down much :).

    * what are you looking to spend?
    * more specific geography
    * high-end, mid-end, quick-eats?

    etc.

    doody.

    OK,OK, my fault for not being specific, but looks like a great start. Sorry guys. We're staying in Burlington, about 15 miles north of Downtown. Casual,cool chic with great food, $20-$25 per w/o drinks. Anything but stuffy. Thanks.

    Just north of the mall in Burlington is a Cuban style seafood restaraunt named the Naked Fish that is very good. In front of the Homewood Suites hotel. Also, East of the mall is Paparazzi's Italian, like a Maggiano's. Legal Seafood in the mall.

    No Name Seafood on the south side of Boston, may be hard to get to with the "Big Dig".

    Best Italian is Camella's in downtown Newton, two blocks from Ferrari of New England. And Newton is where Cavallino Models is. Hole in the wall store front, next to the movie theater.

    Macaroni Grill in burlington has more than decent italian food - right across from the burlington mall. i do lunches there once a quarter or so.

    i'd hesitate to categorize 99% of the suggestions here (including mine) as "GREAT" or anything like that. for $20, you're not gonna be blown out of your seat.

    it's very tough to get out of legal sea foods for < 30 per. i think they're overpriced, but the food is generally quite good.

    doody.

    For a good ambience, decent food, lots of peoplewatching, Newbury St. has a lot of options. If it is warm by Sunday, you might be able to sit outdoors. Armani Cafe is ok, seems to be popular with young foreign student crowd, and the patio is packed when it is warm out.

    Bodega Fiorentina (sp) right off Beacon St. (on Harvard St. I think) - absolutely amazing italian food. hole in the wall type place. quick eat. suggestions: carbonara, lobster ravioli, pumpkin ravioli, 4 cheese ravioli plus a slew of other dishes I can't remember.

    Anna's Taqueria right on Beacon St. - really good burrito's if you like that sort of thing. hole in the wall type place. quick eat. suggestions: green curry pork burrito & queso.

    Tutto Italiano - in Wellesley on Washington St (I think) - phenomenal sandwiches. Only open at lunch time, but well worth the trip. If the weather is nice there's a park opposite to sit and chow down. suggestions: panini w/ proschuitto, proschuitto wrapped parmesan.

    Café Mangal - also in Wellesley right opposite Tutto's. Owned by a Turkish friend of mine. Nice place for afternoon tea and biscuits. Good selection of coffee, tea, and pastries. Really good Salmon sandwich.

    Tamarind - also in Wellesley right around the corner from Tutto's - good thai food.

    Sonsie - end of Newbury St opposite Tower Records/Virgin/Starbucks - can't say enough good things about this place. Everytime I've been it's been amazing. Excellent pepper steak, calamari, salads, seafood. Nice ambience. Weather's probably a little too cold to open the doors onto Newbury yet but still a must do.

    Kashmir - Newbury St. Indian restaurant. Tasty food.

    Top of the Hub - amazing views. Don't think it needs any sort of introduction.

    The Capital Grille - Only been here once and was a little dissapointed. good meat though.

    Seafood - there's a restaurant right on the waterfront from where the harbour tours take off that is really fresh/good. I forget the name but you can't miss it.

    Tapeo - Newbury St. spanish tapas. Good sangria.

    Then you have the usual suspects like Armani Café (overrated for food imo) and stephanie's on newbury (nice in the summer months food is always good though).

    damnit, now I'm hungry :D

    went to university in Boston :D

    two other places I forgot to mention are: figs - one in wellesley and another on route 9 near the chesnut hill mall (they have really good flat crust pizza). second is ciaobella, again on newbury, spanish style tapas bar. I think they have live music on the weekends. can't go wrong with either imo.

    have fun :)

    The Figs on Rte 9 actually closed, but there's another location in Back Bay? Boston.com says 42 Charles Street.

    Figs is also in Wellesley. I am surprised these small time locations got mention!

    Newbury St. is in the Back Bay, and it runs from the old Ritz Carleton at the Park (Boston Common) for about 10-15 blocks of high dollar stores.
