I went to take my 1994 348 for a spin yesterday, after sitting for a week due to wet weather here in Houston. The car started right up, but both check engine lights stayed on, I shut the car down, and noticed a gasoline smell.

I only ran the car for 20 secs or so.....I did notice that the amber lights even stayed on for 5 secs or so after I turned the key off.

I restarted the car an hour later, exact same thing. I assume electrical/coil/distributor prob? Where do I start?

    Thanks in advance

    Jeff

    Hi Jeff.

I got a check engine light for the 5-8 bank once on my car as well. This was after I had left it idle for 3 weeks when I had gone on a holiday.

I pulled the codes - see No doubts link for a good how-to, noted them down (it was a lambda fault) and and then erased the codes. Next, I cleaned all the visible electrical connections in the rear of the car using a contact cleaner and applied di-electric grease. After starting up, I noticed the check engine light disappeared and never showed up again. I filled it with fresh gas as well.

Do these simple things first and then lets see if it solves your problem.

They are all simple fixes. These cars were hand built. Everything on them screws on and unscrews off, or bolts on, unbolts off, or clips on/off.

That's what I tell people who are surprised that I do most of my own mechanical work on my Ferraris. I tell them that believe it or not, they are actually made by human beings.

The 348 in particular is easy to work on. Compared to my previous 1995 Corvette, it's easier to change my 348's fuel filters (by far! the Corvette's is tucked behind the red hot catalytic converter!), easier still to change my 348's tranny fluid (by far! you need a turkey baster and a pump for the Vette!), and easier to change the 348's spark plugs.

It's easier to change the 348's brake fluid than the Vette's, and vastly easier to change the 348's clutch than the Vette's, too. You haven't lived until you've yanked out the lenses to change the Vette's headlamps and tail lights, either. What a pain! Easier to change out the 348's gauges, too.

I've got war stories from a 300ZX (ricers have their own difficulties), Porsche 928, and a host of Jeeps and pickups and vans, as well.

The 348 is just dead easy to work on.

I hear ya bro. My (soon to be) ex had a 325es BMW that was a nightmare to do ANYTHING on. Finally had to give it away because of all the sensors this car had, that went bad, that were connected with the cooling system. Whenever it over heated, it blew out most of the sensors and trying to find which one was a real challenge.

Now the 308 is a different story. When you change the plugs on the front bank it helps if you can dislocate your arms and elbows.
