I was wondering if the bottom removeable 17mm (wrench size ) plugs allow access to the enclosed shielded headers. I am getting exhaust noise from the holes with the plugs removed. Does this mean the headers are leaking due to the dreaded tubing deterioration or do these plugs tap into the header pipes directly? I am guessing that my headers are shot. Anyone know?
    Thanks

That is what they do. The are access holes for exhuast gas analysis. If you are getting noise from the plugs then, they aren't snug. The most common symptom for the headers going bad, in addition to the noise, is little white strands of the heating insulation all over the engine compartment.

If a header is going bad they will often leak out of the insulating jacket right around the plugs. At early stages of failure I use a stethescope at that point to listen for exhaust noise.

What kind of noise should I listen for from the headers? I can hear exhaust noise close to the header plugs when they are in place(using a piece of tubing to my ear). Is that normal? How does the car run if the headers are beginning to fail?
