I have been looking to buy a 348 for a year or two and finally purchased one the end of last year. I found a two owner car with, get this, 99K miles. I sent it to the local Ferrari dealer for an inspection and compression and leak down test and all came back in above average to strong range and the dealer was impressed with how well it did, looked and sounded with the mileage it had. Do not think that this was a well sorted car, it had no proof as it was light on the documentation, but it made the journey to this point in good condition so it had to have been reasonable well cared for but it needed work and I knew it going in. I had it for two days and off it went to Concours Auto for the winter (I live in Wyoming and have little need for the car in the winter!) to have it freshened up. I have been using Joe for about 10 years now for service on my 400i and he keeps the car running great. I had the major service done with new water pump, new second gear syncro installed, all four shocks rebuilt, spacers added and alignment done, new motor and tranny mounts installed, new hoses, and replaced bits and pieces of the fuel system. I now have a well sorted car, well almost; I will pick the car up in a couple weeks and make the long drive home. You know the nice thing about this is I do not have to worry about putting too many miles on the car, what’s the difference 100K, 120K it won’t change the fact that this is a high mileage car so just have fun! Here's a picture.

348s seem to like mileage. Granted, I only have a little less than half of what you have on the odometer, but mine runs like it has something to prove every time. I love that thing... :)

    Big congrats!

That's awesome! How has the interior held up after that many miles? What sort of work have you had to put into it?

The interior is in great shape. Hardly a mark on the side bolsters, no stickies. The carpets appear to be faded but that all. The radio and glove box doors will not stay open but this is an easy fix.

Looks great, congrats and welcome to the Brotherhood.

Quick question, noticed you had the 2nd gear synchro replaced, what's she like now going into second, particularly when cold? I ask because, although mine's fine, several owners report this is a problem. I do what's refered to as the 'shifting trick' all the time with mine, one of the theories being is loosens up the synchro and have no issues so was wondering is having replaced it your's slides into second easily even when cold?

Hi Pete, what is the shifting trick that helps 2nd gear? Haven't heard of that one.

By the way your car does look amazing!

    Cheers.

Hi Peter. It's just something I heard a couple of years ago, I do it religiously every time I drive my car. When I first got her I had the fairly common snag with getting into 2nd when cold and a pretty notchety box in general, now I don't. No idea if it's because of the shifting trick or not but one of the theories is that by doing it you loosen up the synchro.

What you do is go for reverse gear via first in one fluid movement. You push the clutch in, move the stick to the left, then down into first up into reverse (with a bit of downward pressure) with the 'down into first up into reverse' being one movement. No idea why it seems to work but after doing it for a few months my box is way better than it was. I can literally get in the car cold, start driving and second is no snag at all, used to be a no go area till the car was fully warm.

I've heard plenty of people say they tried it and it didn't work but it seems to be a cumulative thing - I got very little benefit for weeks but there is a huge difference now.

Think I read about it here - My Ferrari 348

Edit: It's just below the index, written in purple

Thanks everyone. I’m looking forward to driving her. Pete, I read and heard all about the difficulty with second gear when cold and it would definitely bark at me when it would try to go into second, it was better when at operating temp but you had to be perfect with the shift. I decided, as a quality of driving experience, to have the tranny serviced along with changing the sycro in the hope that the shifting quality would be like near new. I cannot report on how it came out yet but in a couple weeks I’ll know and report back.
