It is an ex box from a totaled 16,000 mile 1992 car. I bought it without the bell-housing for USD5,000. I opened it and aside form some dust and neglect for a few years, it was in perfect shape. The ringnuts were tight, and there was no damage on the pinions or corrosion. I'm going to do a total clean cycle and spray maintenance oil in it then wrap it in wax paper. I have a Mondial t but aside from the different pinion gearing (which will give me a slightly lower bottom end accel but higher top end speed) it will sit here in my garage.

I bought it as a spare for my Mondial t and future 348 as this is the most difficult part to keep - I will buy a Motronic 2.5 engine soon to mate it with. HOWEVER, I could be tempted to put this up to the brotherhood as a rotating spare for the common good, though on terms, that in exchange for getting whoever is damaged on the road ASAP, they then have the time to go and find the necessary spares to get it fixed and return it to me or the next brother. The key thing is all the costs of shipment from and back to my garage as well as the repair costs are up to the one with the broken box. In the event of terminal damage, then we can negotiate a price...

What do you all think a spare box in perfect condition is worth?

$5K sounds awfully rich, but what do I know?

Its not too much . I dont think so atleast,I mean add up a few parts in that sucker & you will easily eclipse that 5k number, I dont think there are many to be had, I'd have bought one instead of my rebuild , the rebuild parts was 4-5k , maybe more. It will come in handy if the vehicle is driven for sure. Who knows what lies ahead in our gear boxes. I take it minute to minute, shift by shift. A spare box in good condition is worth the 5k. From what I've heard there are no more new ones. If someone has an explosion & its a mess in their box. The options are few & none. Any option is expensive, very expensive.

Excellent price! Always cheaper when you don't HAVE to have it! Having spares also guarantees that you won't need it. Parts you have spares for never break. I keep a spare motor for that very reason!

    That's funny.

Everything that everyone buys paid "too much" in your mind and everything that anybody sells is asking "too much"

As a comparison...FoNE estimated 6K to rebuild mine when I did the Major last winter. From a parts and labor perspective without consideration for removal and reinstall, I'd say your price sounds about right.

I may be wrong, but I don't think a 348 gearbox will mount up to a Mondial-t. I think the mounting is different. I have a Mondial-t gearbox if your interested in a trade.

Just going this route now, (mechanic was looking used box 1 hour ago), mine is still pretty ok (had to change shaft+ bearing but decided want to get it to be "as new" condition. I totally shocked when I saw part prices, e.g. synchros for 1st and 2nd. I understood that Ferrari has raised these prices massively lately, so thanks for Ferrari making rebuilding 348 next to impossible. :( :( :(
I would like to know how much would be brand new box if that could still be bought? But next best opinion seem to buy good used one instead of repairing old even though it would only need small amount (and normally cheap) parts. :(

Marco, if you decide to sell let me know. :) (I'm also London based)

$ 5000 is a good price. I paid 4000 pounds UK for mine, off a write-off. At the time I was looking Ferrari in Italy had a recon 348 box for just more than $ 20 000!!!

I really hope someone would start remanufacturing gears, synchros and bearings for these boxes. These parts prices are ripp off! :( (vs. Porsche that supplies parts at very reasonable costs even if 40years old model) Ferrari really like to suck every last penny from owners, no wonder I have no interest to give them my money by buying new car. :D

Then, we should have bought 2 Ferraris. One in the garage with ocassional runs, so the first one never ever breaks. Now ... wait a minute ... this is starting to sound good ;-)

That's how I ended up with three cars, a good idea but they'll break faster than my technician works.....LOL!

Possible, but think it an over-reaction. These 348 trannys are good to go. Just check that nut, and with some inspections good to go: they are fine transmissions... I think the guy spent too much on nothing.

When I had to redo my gearbox in '05 (for the second time in 15 years btw), I priced a new gearbox from Ferrari. They wanted $15K US at the time. So we rebuilt it using the improved parts from the 355. It should be bullet proof now..... like the rest of the car!

I have to agree with Rik. I think I have the record on the number of these gearboxes rebuilt. People are over reacting to the problems in these boxes. For sure I would rather have a 348 gearbox issue than a 355 with bad guides...some like wine some like beer.

What parts can be used from 355 gearboxes? (or what are these improvement to strenghten 348 gearbox where 355 parts are used?)

My calculations are that you very quickly reach 6-8k$ bill just for parts even if your box is not chewed. (bearing, couple of gears plus synchros) Reverse+1gear is 5000$ just by itself!!!
I'm going for very low mileage used (and checked 'box), still keeping original. But mine is not even badly gone but still no point of repairing at this point!
