Sounds like a fair price to me, mine cost me $1100.
What I really like about the Streetpilot is that it's portable, meaning I don't have to buy one for each of my three cars, I just take it with me when I go.
It's very clever, you can search for the nearest gasstation or restaurant and it will guide you there. I have yet to explore the voice control so I don't know have good that works yet..

I was just looking at the same Garmin this weekend.

One thing not clear from their site was how the data can be updated, but surely it can be. Can it run on batteries and be carried, or is it really just for car navigation?

I don't think you f***ed up at all. If you did, I will be with you.

One of the prior threads somewhat favored the Magellan (700?) over the older Garmins, but when I cantacted them the model was being discontinued, so I am looking at the Garmin.

Please let us know how it works out.

Not sure of your question or even if it is to me.

The device can go in any car, thats the advantage. I had an Acura with a GPS system, but I fear it will be like an outdated cell phone in a few years. I'm not sure if cars with older GPS systems will be a little quaint in 5 years kind of like seeing an older Acura or BMW with a built in phone that has been terribly outdated. I'm just not sure how the GPS thing will play out.

I'll update this after I get the machine and tell everybody how it worded out.

I didn't read the title and thought it was about a Carman Ghia. Then instead of hitting "back", I posted, which resulted in the waste of space my post created and then causing you to reply to my post wasted your time. See how being nosey effects the world. I feel so bad about this. Sorry!

I have a 98 BMW with factory Nav. I just got updated CDs, works fine to this day. Lacks soom of the bells but still whistles pretty damn well.

You can update nav gens in bmw cars. I have the MKII, current is a Dvd based super fast MKIV. Updating is the best way IMO, since it retains the familar operating systems/setup, while adding new features, better maps, and faster routing.

OK, I got my Garmin 2620 http://www.meridiantactical.com/ga26conorbuf.html and I've had time to get to know it.

Let me say, in general, I'm a really practical guy and I usually don't care too much for involved functions on electronic devices.

Second let me say that I am comparing it to a built in GPS I had in a 2004 Acura TSX.

The device seems well made, and the screen is a lot smaller than I expected. It has a sandbag that really sticks well to the dash even on twist roads. It has a smaller disc for sticking in a car for a more permanant installation as well as a cigarette adaptor with a built in speaker. Also, it has a AC adaptor for use in a house etc. It has a remote that works GREAT and a nice touch screen. The screen is good and bright and easy to read. The cradle is lockable and very adjustable.

It initially took about 5 minutes to find the satellites and will loose them in tall treed roads (the Acura one never did). It comes with a lot of stuff preloaded and a CD disc for the computer although I'm not sure what for. I guess you can download detail ed maps of different areas not already in it.

It is intuitive and seens to give reasonable directions although the map of my neighborhood is 10 years old!!

For $988 I think it is a reasonable alternative to the $1500 (Volvo) and $1900 (Acura) systems I'm used to.

As far as mounting on a motorcycle, I've not done that yet, but I do know people have mounted the 2610. I do not know of the "waterproofness" of the device.

I just bought a Pelican 1200 Case for it for $40.

Would I recommend it? Yes, I think with its limitations it gives a decent alternative to the built in systens costing almost twice as much, and since I still have non-GPS cars, it satisfies the need satisfactorily while I still own these cars.

Boat owners correct me if I'm wrong but I think Garmin has a good reputation for quality products.

I don't own a boat, but the aviation community thinks very highly of Garmin. I've owned several, they are well-designed and reliable in my experience.
