Ooofff!! Man you got a project there!! I wanna see this thing in person. Maybe over the holidays the wife and I will shoot by for a visit. And if I happen to have a spare bottle of your favorite cognac (you know I will) I'll bring that too..maybe the Henessy XO thats hanging around here someplace...A pair core and 2 grapes..
Yes come up its a good excuse to visit but if you don't have cognac don't bother coming lol. Tiff can show us her carving skills.
Check this out! Im finding orange under the black on the front frame under the bumper. Orange inside the doors with grey on top then red over grey. I know the car was repainted grey between 78 and 80 then red in 88. We assumed the car was red but it might have been orange. The car was owned by ferrari from 76-78 so it wasnt titled until 78 when it was sold "new" to an american. See the side impact beam added during the DOT conversion. NEWMAN! I'd say what you're looking at is an original 'Arancia' car. What a wacky period color (with a far better name than 'orange' too I'm sure) that'd put it in the extremely rare category. Very cool. Regarding the door beams, I imported a Dino 246 back in the day, and the DOT dude put - and I'm not making this up - a square, expandable curtain rod in my door for photo purposes and took it back out. I didn't know this til years later, had no reason to question. At least yours has some version of beam in there. Neat to uncover history as you go!
Good day Paul, Mine is like that too... My car's inside doors and places appeared to have been this Orange color too... I was unsure if the car was originally this color or was changed at some point... I could not really tell, as if it was painted it was quite thorough. Anyway, either the car's started out like this and then painted later by the factory, or they were originally this Orange color... Cheers, Sam
As a follow up, I may have found some additional info. I logged onto the Ferrari's owner's site to see if I could find out anything further. I registered my car with them a number of years ago and have not logged in for quite a while. Anyway, I noticed that the color listed for my car was changed to what I registered it as and now lists the color as "Rosso Dino" with an interior color of "PELLE NERA VM 8500 ". I am pretty sure that the "Rosso Dino" color is the color of my friend's 246 GTS which is an Orangie-red. Now, I need to find a paint swatch of "Rosso Dino" to verify the color against my car. Anyway, perhaps your client should register his car with the Ferrari Owner's site and see what color will be listed by Ferrari? Cheers, Sam
Good day again Paul, As an additional Follow-up... I found a picture of what is told to be "Rosso Dino" as well as the site that lists a number of Ferrari colors. http://www.jb330gt.com/Colors.htm Cheers, Sam Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks Sam, when I saw the orange I thought Rosso Dino which I mentioned to the owner but thought Rosso Dino was more of a red than an orange like on this car. I dont know. Spoke to Dick today and he said the first 365 boxer was orange and he had sold a carbed 512 to a man in the US many years ago that was orange as well but its not the car I have here. There are a few orange BB's running around but not many. If yours is too thats cool and they're both in Canada.
I have seen a Rosso Dino Enzo. Looks orange in person, but looks quite a bit more red in pictures - Not really as orange as they Dino in the picture above. Image Unavailable, Please Login
We'll see what ferrari says. The frame and inner structure is all orange under the black and beige primer under that then metal. The body was stripped to metal for the red repaint in 88 so theres no trace of orange on the body panels. Took a seat out, exterior mirrors and wiring as it had flag style power mirrors. Removed a bunch of aftermarket wiring for radar, alarm, stereo and cell phone! Look at the pile of garbage under the relay panel! Steering wheel ring nut has seen better days More paint history shots. Some shots from today, more orange paint. Interior out, found the 5L on the head liner which is interesting and no coach builder sequence numbers anywhere on any part. Rust on parcel shelf and rocker from a water leaks at the right quarter glass from a lack of sealant after the red repaint. Rear fog light switch. Heard of rear fog lights ala BBi on carbed 512's and I recall that odd single red rear light mounted on the clamshell near the license plate as well. The car has the wiring inside as well as the switch but cant find the wiring at the rear as of yet. Ive seen an old picture of a BB512 with the rear BBi fog lights in the valance. This car was federalized (twice) and the rear frame shows where add-on structure was cut off and a regular bumper was put back on when it was unconverted. Anyone else seen a carbed 512 with 2 rear fog lights? Number 10 is the rear fog light, very uncommon. Ill inspect the clamshell for evidence of a filled hole. Image Unavailable, Please Login
My previous BB, S/N 21171 [now being restored by Hawkeye] had rear fogs. I doubt it was original though. The car also had BBi side mirrors and TRX wheels and tires. I believe the 2nd owner had these upgrades done in the early 80s. I had it in 1985-2000
Parts manual doesnt show a pair for a carbed car. Did your at least have a fog light switch that was operational? That one doesnt count! I dont think thats the case because its just badly pitted and still solid. There are other ways I can deal with that without removing the shelf. If it was an external panel thats a different story.
Good day Paul, No rear fog lights on my car (chassis 21659), nor any wiring found for them. I wonder if the rear fog lights were destination Country Specific? Also, my fog light switch is in the same location as what you have shown (right of choke), however, my "label" just says "fog". Cheers, Sam
Thanks Sam, Yes the light would be specific to its destination. The gauges on this car are in italian rather then english like mine which went to Zurich when new. Found the wiring right to the back of the car which runs to the left tail light housing like the pic here. My carb BB has a fog light switch, but no fog lights that I can see, front or rear. I have the federalization pics from Dick Fritz, and I don't see any fog lights back then either. Could they have out switches in some cars with no lights? My car was delivered new to Italy, incidentally.
