If you want to make money stick to conventional investments. The most you can hope for with classic cars is to break even or if you are real lucky, score a modest increase. Even then you will be miles behind your conventional investments.

 

Surely a white 512BB driven by an elderly owner must be worth at least $80k

When the 365 GT4/BB debuted at the Turin Motor Show in 1971, it stood the world on its ear. Its factory rated 380bhp horizontally-opposed ‘boxer’ 12-cylinder engine was mounted amidships and it delivered performance that surpassed not only its competition, the Lamborghini Miura, but also its predecessor, the legendary Ferrari Daytona. The GT4/BB followed traditional Ferrari practice of tubular steel construction clothed with a sleek and sensuous Pininfarina body, but while it kept the Daytona’s bore, stroke, and compression ratio, its 4.4 liter engine was based on Ferrari’s successful 312B F1 racer.

The 365 Boxer’s performance was blistering then, and today it is still among the fastest cars in the world. Mel Nicols recorded 0-60 in 5.3 seconds, with 100 coming up in an incredible 11.3 seconds from rest. Top speed for the production cars was a staggering 180mph.

Despite the increased engine displacement of 600cc, the 512 BB, successor to 365, was less powerful, slower and significantly heavier than its predecessor, mostly due to the imposition of stricter government regulation. This cements the 365 Boxer as the purist’s choice.

Of the 387 examples built, none were officially imported to the US until recently. Thus, the cars that comprise the estimated population of less than 20 have been introduced as either gray market imports or under the current 25-year compliance exemption. The 365 Boxer is also the last Ferrari to be eligible for many of the popular vintage rallies, open to “significant sports, racing or GT cars 1974 or prior.” Its modern performance coupled with visceral vintage feel and robust nature makes it a perfect mount for these wonderful events.

Chassis 17543 is one of the earliest Boxers made. It is particularly unique and especially desirable, as it is the first car to receive the benefit of several running changes, including a modified cylinder head design and an updated transmission; it is also the last car to have the early, one piece fixed backrest seats. As such it is the only car to combine these running improvements with the unique seats that represented Pininfarina’s original styling vision.

This car was imported in the 1980s and restored during the ownership of well known West Coast collector Mike Dunn. Both original tool kits are included, which is a good thing, as they now sell (without a car) for over $5,000. It features a gorgeous, fresh repaint in its original color of Blue Ribot over a lovely black/tan interior. A major service including timing belt replacement and valve adjustment was completed less than 1,000 miles ago by respected Ferrari experts RPM in Vermont, whose proprietor, obviously proud of his work states: "The car runs and drives absolutely as new. "

Ferrari Boxers have appreciated along with the market for vintage Ferraris in recent years and there is evidence that they are now being ‘discovered’ for the great enjoyment and investment value they represent. As the rarest model, with superior performance, the 365 Boxer has begun to break away from its 512 successor. To understand why, ask the Ferrari collector who has recently had the pleasure of driving this car: "This is everything a Ferrari should be, the perfect blend of the raw and the refined, agile but not harsh, and with the sound that everyone talks about but cannot be heard unless you are in this car right now."

Lots and lots of "poetic license" in that auction catalogue write up. Not the least of which are the performance claims and the exaggerated criticism of the 512BB.

But BB's are great cars and much undervalued and the 365 has more of the Group C racecar feel than the more refined 512.

Amongst many highlights of quality journalism, this is the same mag that called the Jag XJ40 "The world's best car". I read it for entertainment, not information.

btw Motoring journalists have a habit of overrating any supercar they get their hands on. They know that an invitation to the next exotic press release junket depends on the literary largess they bestow on the manufacturer. UK journos earn rubbish money, they'll never be troubled by the decision of which Italian supercar to buy for themselves.

fair points though...besides commenting on perhaps a quirky feature or two they are hardly going to can a supercar horribly unless they dont value an invitation back for the next launch
