Am closing in on a Boxer and need to know maintenance issues associated with them. Specifically what are the differances between the 365 , 512BB and the 512BBi (Other than common issues such as belt changes). I plan on only driving the car 5 or 6 times a year and am concerned with the carbs gumming up or getting unsyncronised,(is this possible? )from the car just sitting. Is the clutch wear very different between the variations? I know the BBi needs less care but WOW to have a 365 would be cool. Or is the BB a reasonable compromise? Most comparison threads deal with performance .

    Dave,

You will not resist the urge to drive this car every weekend! You'll soon be looking for restaurants or diners 100 miles away, just for a cup of coffee. It made all the right sounds! Need to get your PPI squared-away.

A boxer needs lots of TLC(maintanance) Any car if used infrequently requires even more maintanance than one enjoying steady execise.

Boy, you've got to have some serious will power!
I have had my car for 3 weeks and have driven more than that!

I think the choice between the 3 models is a personal preference.
I was looking for the best car I could find out of all 3 models.
Some people limit their choice to just one model.
There was not a big enough difference for me to exclude any of the 3.

I agree find the best car, they all have their plusses and minuses.

The 365 has a single disk clutch and is operated by cable, 512s have a dual disk hydraulic operated with easier pedal effort.

    365 wet sump. 512s dry sump, 512s redline at 7000, 365 7700

365s have pump and pray chokes, 512s electric chokes
A few other diffs between models, springs, wheels, weights

BBis have dual alternators, more lighting, elec mirrors

While carbs are more tempermental, once set up right they are okay, so I have heard, will see when I get mine straightened out, I would say FI would be more reliable as a whole but they get very complicated if you start having FI issues as you have 2 totally separate systems that must run in sync.

As I said all Boxers are great and the last of the hand made Ferraris, the owner of the body shop working on my car cracked up laughing and said "how'd you like to be the guy hammering these out all day" when he took the metal headlight cover off my car to paint black, when he looked on the back side of it and saw all these little cuts in the metal from hammer marks from hand hammering the covers, the whole car is like that.

If you are really only going to drive it 5 or 6 times per year (i.e. it will be sitting for several months at a time), I would probably go with a BBi. I think you will have fewer problems.

So far, my carb car has been great, but my mechanic has commented to me that having the car sit with old gas in the carbs for an extended time is not a good thing.

I don't drive mine very much either, but I am trying for at least once a month, minimum, which should be sufficient to avoid any problems.

If that's all you plan on driving it, don't buy it. IMHO it will be a waste for you to take a Boxer off the market so a real enthusiast who will drive it can't buy it. Just go to Vegas or Hawaii 5-6 times a year and rent a Ferrari while you're there instead. It will be much cheaper that what would be a garage queen will end up costing you.

My main worry was with the carb/gas issue but hope that will be resolved with Stabil. I've had gas go bad in about a month during the summer.Easy on the clutch for all of them.

You just aint going to believe this but there are some low milage Ferraris out there to be had. Aparently not too many enthusiasts in the Ferrari market.

parkerfe ; hows the cherry bomb project turning out?

LightGuy, there is an article in the recent issue of the FML that makes fun of all those non-enthusiast out there that own a Ferrari but never drive it and the garage queen problems associated therewith. And, my comments on the Cherry Bombs were bsed on the great sounding Boxer I recently heard with such a set-up. My Ansa Sports mufflers are in good shape for now, but, if I do ever need to replace them I will likely go with such a set-up.

    Ha! Ralph.

Not yet, but I came close!
My wife caught me, in the garage, just sitting in the car (ya know bonding with it) asked me if I was going to sleep there and then told me to get up to bed!

Ralph, It was a little snug. Found a 12v alarm clock to wake me in the morning. Thankfully Florida winters are mild. Propped-up a LCD TV on the dash and played the Rendevouz DVD until I fell asleep.

Seriously though, my Jag VDP with the stretched wheelbase is a better "sleeper car."
