I read in a post somewhere that one could do a boxer belt change without removing the engine by dropping the gas tank. Is this true and if so how difficult an operation is this? By the way I already did a search for [ belt change boxer ] and found no related posts that came up.

It's slower and harder, possibly no less expensive and definitely less thorough to do it any other way than by removing the engine.

Removing a BB engine is SOOO easy. It's designed to be done that way.

A BB belt change only done PROPERLY will only take approx 24 hrs from road test to road test (including oil and filters along the way), plus other servicing as required. (So long as it's not a rusted wreck to begin with). Incorporate valve clearances and timing checks and it's still only approx 40 hours and the job is so much better than an in situ job.

To remove tanks etc and do belts (if even possible, I wouldn't waste my time trying), would still take around the same time and you take many risks along the way.

There are so few advantages and so very many disadvantages to fighting the job with engine in place....

I tell you what, just try it anyway to see how you go. Much more is learned by mistakes than from doing things right the whole time....

All belt changes on 348 355 512bb and TRs need the engine removed. Period. What would Enzo do?

While the belts can be changed with the engine in, you can't change the tensioner bearings nor re-degree the cams.
