    I am making progress in hopefully solving my overheating issues- pulled the thermostat and tested it in near boiling H2O- just barely opened at high temp leading me to think this is indeed the problem. The stat opens about 1/16" or so at near boiling-I would expect quite a bit more,
    Now with replacing the stat I want to replace the small pieces of connecting hose and was wondering if anyone has a suggestion re: the highest quality product to use. This was replaced about 2 y ago at the time of an engine rebuild (another story) and "green line" hose is used. Any suggestions?

    You're right. The stat should be fully opened well before boiling temp.

    I used hose from NAPA auto parts, but I'm sure any high quality will work.
    For the hose that comes off the bottom of the stat housing, which flows coolant back to the inlet side of the pump, instead of using a straight hose and bending it, I picked out a preformed hose with close to the required bend in it, then just used that section of hose trimmed to fit.

    I'm still trying to get a new unit but will be very hopefully that this ends up really solving all the problems-I guess if there is still any issue the radiator will need attention. Great suggestion re: the hose and using the preformed section, anything to make this reinstall a little easier. Love the way Ferrari has designed things to perfectly interfere with service items like this-or do we default to the typical "pull the engine" approach...

    Sounds like it was your problem, one note is in the WSM Ferrari specified to drill 2 small holes in the T stat to reduce cavitation on the top and lower pieces.

    On the BBi cars, a full bypass type thermostat is used...Hence, this particular modification does not apply. The 365 and 512 cars used a drop-in type thermostat, whereas the BBi used a self-contained thermostat unit (BMW-style). An interesting note that both the 365 and 512 cars can be updated to the full bypass type thermostat using a "kit" from Ferrari. I did this modification on my car to improve water flow and reduce vibrations from the cooling tubes which run the length of the chassis.

    I would like to see a pic of a $600 thermostat, they are usually a $30 item so I guess the yellow box is $570.

    I may have found one at a great discount of $250!- don't know for sure though.
    I have sort of given up on the sticker shock of Ferrari parts, Heck my distributor cap and rotor were in the $800 category.

    I used hose from my local motor parts shop cut to size, but I dont understand why a stat costs so much, Ferrari UK classic parts list the stat for the BBi at £68.40 sterling plus sales tax @ 17.5% its part no #106393

    I have a thermostat on the way from ICP- $240. I really hope that this solves the problem and I can avoid rebuilding the radiator. Given that the top tank never gets warm I really think the stat is the problem.
    I'm really looking foward to the joys of reinstalling this guy:)

    Hi Ludwig, Just a quick thought on hose to use any good hose is probably fine but, I have used the blue silcone hose, which is kinda pricey but lasts forever, or the Gates green stripe hose that you can get at most parts houses. Regards, Vern

    Thanks Vern- do you know where a supply source is for the blue silicone hoses- also any better choices amongst stainless hose clamps

    If you are using silicone hose you must use good quality s/s hose clips that are sleeved, normal clips may pinch through the silicone.

    I have used Pegasus Racing Supplies 1-800-688-6946 the brand name is sfs performance hose. Have them send you a catalogue. And you do need to use a proper type clamp. I'm sure you have seen how some clamps have the track holes in the clamp band? Don't use them. Anyway Pegasus will have the clamps you want. Regards, Vern
