Hi, Just removed the exhaust from my '84 Boxer to fit a new system, only to find that what I had been told were were cats turned out to be straight through 'bypass' pipes....no cats at all. These ran directly to the two outer resonator boxes. The car was not at all noisy which I find suprising. The two lower/smaller exhaust pipes were run to the pipe shown in the pic, the other two smaller pipes were blanked off. Anyone have any experience of this setup?
The pipes are in perfect condition (stainless) other than some discolouration, any use to anyone?

    Hi Robert,

I'm very curious about what system you're installing too.

I've been looking for a used Tubi or Ansa Sport for my car, but haven't had any luck. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a new Tubi.

I've done some research and am surprised at the number of companies that are still making performance mufflers for Boxers: Larini Systems (England), Mille Miglia (Australia), Stebro (Canada), Koenig (Germany) and Tubi (Italy). Ansa and Borla are no longer making them.

If your curious, here's the way the original factory Boxer exhaust system looks. Two side pod resonators and two stacked center muffers. It's too quiet for me!

The exhaust I've bought for the car is from Amerispec; one of the orriginal euro spec ones removed when the cars where converted to US spec. However, this one is a little different as it doesn't use the resonator boxes, but exits the rear of the car with the normal twin tips straight from the silencer boxes. The twin outlets are bolted on in place of the resonators. I'm looking forward to hearing what it sounds like.
My Boxer is an '84 all red with tan leather (daytona style seats...red stripes). It's now done about 21,000...2,500 put on by me in the last 6 months. I will get some pictures together and post them....it has the exhaust off for replacement, and I'm changing the brake rotors to Brembos with Kevlar pads whilst it's off the road for a day or two.

There was no U.S. spec Boxer exhaust as the car was never officially imported here. And, the four can(two muffler-two resonator) exhaust was the only exhaust that came on the Boxer from Ferrari regardless of the market. You can see the Boxer parts catalog at www.owners.ferrari.com . The two can exhaust system that has the tail pipes exit directly therefrom are "Ansa Sports exhaust" which is what I have on my BB512i. They were dealer installed exhaust that many Boxers had installed because the four can systems were so quite. My Boxer had the Ansa Sports exhaust system installed on it when new by Ferrari Francorchamps in Belgium prior to being bought by the U.S. company that converted it for U.S. use. You should also note that a lot of the Boxers converted by Amerispec were not new cars, but were Boxers which had already been driven and modified by their european owners prior being sold to the U.S., altough some were new cars.

    Robert,

It sounds you've got an Ansa "sport" muffler, because the diagram I posted is the original Euro "factory" exhaust system for the injected Boxers.

Do you have to cap off any of the header outlets to use this system? Or, do the mufflers bolt right up to the 4-outlets per side on your headers?

Gary, you should note that while my BB512i has the two can Ansa sports exhaust system, it does not have any of the pipes from the headers capped off. The mufflers themselves have connections for all eight of the pipes coming from the headers including the small diameter tubes that branch off from the headers. What you have probably seen is Boxers that people have removed the two resonators and installed Ansa mufflers that were not Boxer specific and did not have the four connections per muffler that connect up to the Boxer headers.

    Frank,

    Thanks for the info.

I do know someone in my area who has a "Borla" muffler system on his '83 Boxer, but the Borla didn't bolt up to all 8 outlets. He had to cap off at least two.

I'm probably going to buy a Tubi, which has 8- inlets.

    Here's what it looks like.

Hey Gary, b4 you purchase let me know what price you are intending, I priced around and dennis McCann seems to be way under most others.

    Michael,

I don't plan on buying Tubi headers, because a previous owner already had a a set of factory Euro headers (no air injection lines) jet coated silver and installed.

I'm going to buy just the Tubi muffler.

Yes, the Griot's catalog has mailed. You can see it pictured on their website at: www.griotsgarage.com

I reciently installed a custom built exhaust from Dick Fritz at Amerispec and am VERY happy. Sounds awsome and I swear the car runs better - I know its awful easy to spin the rubber in the rear now! It was about $3,600 and fairly easy to install.

    Hey Boxer Boy,
I recently met Dick Fritz at Greenwich Concours, He told me of all the testing and development by a team of Sound experts as to which set up sounded the best,He said the system was truly the best set up available for this car. I was intrigued...I am about to commit to some exhaust and this one is on my list...did you cahnge headers or stock...what tailpipes are in rear...Does it ROAR?
Please give more input how tou like it...any PICS?
    Thanks Michael

I purchased the version with cats and am very happy with the system. Basically its from the stock headers back - headers to cats to silencers. Dick custom makes the tailpipe and supplies the polished SS exhaust tips. I specifically asked him to make it substantally louder than "stock" and while I am VERY happy with the sound, I could have handled it a touch louder. I would imangine that without the cats it would be as such. My other car (3.2 Mondial) has a tubi and it is dramatically louder - high pitched whine versus a lower grunt.

The BBi sounds much more like what you expect (at least what I did) from a 12 - much more throaty (sp?) than the 8.

Initially was really disapointed in the tubi and actually considered going back but now I really like it as well - I really did not enjoy my BBi for the last few years and now, like the tubi on the Mon, really enjoy the car - most of it due to the new exhaust.

Installiation was a fun process and I did it in a few cold winter days, the last part is tacking the tips to the tailpipe and that was a bummer but none the less its all part of the process. (If you need help with the project I'd be happy to supervise from afar!)

PM if you want any further info.

    All,

There was quite a long and drawn out debat about this subject on the UK forum, (Can't find it now) ?

But I have a QuickSilver 'Supersports' exhaust on my Boxer, (Linl for the company is below), They sound far better than any Tubi I have ever heard and are more cost effective, They have a deeper, throat-ier roar and scream like F1 exhaust at higher revs - Best money I have ever spent, I will be a Returning customer !!!

The noise level is around 110 - 120 Db and a minimum of 12 BHP, (For the Supersports system) less for the standard and 'sports' systems ?

    Regards,

    Seb

Well, I bit the bullet the other day and ordered a brand new Tubi muffler for my Boxer.

They didn't have any in stock, so Tubi will have to build one in Italy and ship it. It's going to take apx. 6-weeks for delivery.

I can't wait to HEAR it on the car. I'll probably install it myself and will post some pictures of the process and maybe a sound file of it fired up.
