i am having trouble w/ my car wanting to overheat. the fans are not working when the car gets to temp...all fuses/relays seem in order and the fans when hot wired will work fine. are there any other things i should do in order to troulble shoot this? have any other boxer owners seen similar issues?

there are several points that could be problem points...real advice?

    thanks ,

    peter

Gotta be the temp sensor that screws into the radiator - it is a thermal switch that can go bad. It can also be tested in situ when the car gets up to temp by means of a simple connectivity test. The only other thing I can think of is a flow problem caused by an air bubble.

In other words process of elimination, First hot wire the fans independently to make sure they work, then check temp sensor.

    ted,

thank you for the advice. the fans are working properly. the rad is filled and has been "burped" so no air bubbles.

the temp sensor will be checked next.

of the three fans..the out ward fans for standard cooling and the middle for a/c?
    is that accurate?

If memory serves correctly, the yellow one in the middle is for a/c and comes on with the a/c switch

If you replace the thermal switch - you can get one that will turn on the fans at a lower temp - I recall it is a vw part and the trigger is something like 87C - the archives will have the string.

On a BB512i it is the passenger side/right side fan that comes on with the a/c, not the center yellow fan. The reason the center fan is different from the other two fans is only due to depth clearance.

    Hi.....

Perform a thread search at this site and the "other site" for Boxer cooling problems.

As I recall, one owner observed normal operation of fans, but they were actually wired incorrectly and running "backwards".

Most common problem is melted fuse block in the glove comaprtment.

    Good luck !!
