I live in the Dallas/Ft Worth area and have owned my 79 512 for 6 years. Its time for an engine out major service. Anyone know who the best mechanics in this area are? I have one estimate for $7,000 which includes a new ac compressor and $500 for wheel refinishing. Is this a good ballpark figure? Any comments/suggestions welcome!

i suspect the cost will be greater than that. there are lots of other items that need to be addressed during a major that run the score card up a good bit...water pump, hoses, fixed lines, clutch, other...

10k is more a number that i would suggest more valid.

    best, pcb

Mine came in right at about $10k, which included sending all the carbs out for rebuild. My car was otherwise in very good shape, and didn't require a lot.

In early 2003 I negotiated with FoA to do a major on my BB512i for $3000.00 labor plus parts. It turned out to cost me a little more than $6,500.00 and that included a new water pump, tensioner bearings, having the entire engine repainted, new water hoses and a few other odds and ends along with the major cam belt/valve adjustment service itself. They also removed and reinstalled the brake calipers for me so I could have them re-gold cad plated while the service was being done. I had the exhaust system cermanic coated while the engine was out as well. IMHO, $10k is way out of line unless you have some other problems with your car or need a new clutch, which my car did not .

Thanks for the feedback so far. Clutch and carbs are fine- my car has about 20,000 km on the clock. Anybody know the best mechanics??

    Labor prices will be similair

My question is how much 1979 parts will cost ?

Pretty soon you'll have to find them in a museum or have them made from scratch like 50's car owners do

Countach parts cost an arm & a leg

Well, if you're in the DFW area, you're in the right place. It's a no brainer. Just take the car over to Norwoods. I've been doing business with them for years. Their prices are good. They're work is slow, but done RIGHT, and it's Guarenteed. The guy that owns and runs the place can often be found in the shop, with his hands in a car. He knows of what he speaks.

Are you referring to James Patterson? He used to work for Norwood's but started his own shop a few years ago.

James Patterson actually runs Norwood's now - I think he bought the place.
They are truly one of the best in the country; I am a very satisfied customer

James is the mechanic I've been using- I guess I'll stick with him.

    Yes. You are correct.
I had the fortunate opportunity to spend the day with Bob Norwood a few years ago. He told me how James had been working for him for many years. He'd been present and a major player in all the Norwood mods. He'd been to the salt flats and helped to set records in the Norwood turbo cars, (both as a mechanic, and a driver as well). Bob was very pleased that James had moved up to running the place. He called it "the American dream".
Once I had become aquainted with Mr. Patterson and his work, and honest way of doing business, I knew this was the place.
