HI. I'm wondering how many miles are too many miles on a Boxer. Would gladly pay more for a lower mile example, than a higher mile example but none to be found in the right colors for me(not red). Does anybody have a high miles Boxer that is reliable ? Thanks
There was one on ebay last year, a carbed car with 180,000km, around 110,000 miles. Professionally rebuilt (traco or somebody like that) and maintained, it took a beating no sale around $42K, IIRC. I always wondered what happened to it. In Chicago. It was Black /black, a little tatty but a solid driver! HTH
Boxers tend to be low miles, due to the nature of the car. It has no trunk space, and so is not the best touring car, and for most people they are not practical daily drivers in the same way a 456 or 550 (or 400/412, for that matter) is. So Boxers tend to be used for Saturday morning drives, that sort of thing, and don't accumulate a lot of miles. There are always exceptions, but I think the vast majority of them are 30,000 miles or less. That's not to say that a Boxer won't hold up fine for 100k+ miles, just that there are a lot of low mileage examples out there. Don't forget that many of them still have KPH speedometers! Also consider that if you find a Boxer with an MPH speedo, it was most likely installed at some later date and so may not reflect the actual mileage on the car.
I actually got a chance to test drive that particular car as a friend of mine was looking for one at the time. It was a strong driver, from my short ride I could tell that gearbox, engine, brakes and suspension worked just fine. No surprise there as the owner had his own racing shop maintaining it. However you could tell the car's age by its looks, especially the inside was very used. That car would have cost a lot to be turned into concours level, but not too much to "just" make it a good driver. No idea what ever happened to it.
That "Ken Sr." Boxer just dropped off the map, Andreas???? I kept that phone number a LONG time but never got together with him.....
As a whole I think Boxers are one of the least driven Ferraris of all the models, many have anywhere from 900 miles to 15k, I think most if not all have speedo odometers in KMs as the US conversions had just rescreening of the face plate, you would need to change the internals and gearing of the speedo to convert the odometer in KMs. Thats said anything over 20k miles is considered higher miles for a Boxer, ones with 50k+ miles are relatively unheard of even though in reality some may actually have it but have been rolled back several times.
You also probably have Boxer owners who are waiting for the late 80's market to return. This time they will catch the train. I "think" production #'s (although low by modern standards) would actually prohibit that from happening again. Inflation would be a different event. A driven car is a reliable car. - and a fun car.
The black car in Chicago interests me as it may be the same car I am looking at now. Was it original paint 1979 model ? Yokohama aoo8's ? Anybody remember ? Thanks for all the replies !
That's the one! Where is it???????? 180,000 km, IIRC.. Take that speeedo unit out and throw it away! LOL! I have the pics from the auction at home somewhere. A little tatty but as Andreas has confirmed, nothing wrong with any part of it. Professionally maintained.. There was a thread on it, here, as we watched the auction, can someone link it????? A carbed Boxer for $40K had my name all over it! Bought a second 2 owner 308GTB instead...........Chicago was a long way to go...Of course, so was Portland!
That's it...accident free history...straight body.......looked darn good in the photos......metal wise......needed some fresh trim.......quilted blanket on the front bonnet was loose.....
I have several pictures of it from my encounter last year. Paint was probably original as it wasn't good anymore when up close. Looked great from 6 feet away though. Let me know if you want me to send some pics or post some here. Big Tex, you're right the front hood quilt was torn. As I said, many cosmetic things needed attention. My calculation was that the paint job costs 10k. Redoing the interior is another 10k. So for 60k you'd have a really nice boxer, but then for that money you could get one with a lot less miles. But if you can live with its looks without doing the paint and interior, then you got yourself a bargain.
I went by ebay photos only........ And a trip to Neuvo Laredo would have new paint AND tuck and roll for $2K! LOL! "Too poor to paint, too proud to white wash..." Did you hear the story of Leon Mandel taking a new Ford Mustang demo down and retrimming it? Hilarious! They did it during Lunch!
Thanks to all and yes, please post pictures if you have any. The speedo (kph) on a car I am looking at says 80000 and I'm trying to determine if it is the same car and it has already been around once meaning 180000. It is now priced in the mid 70's. I'm hoping it is not the same car.
Nope, that's the one...180,000 equals 110,000 miles, new engine at 90,000 miles.........maybe THEY went to Nuevo Laredo.......
Refering to my beloved 512TR there is no such thing as too many miles for me to drive her. Too little on the other hand is every chance I had to drive her that I passed up the enjoyment. When we are too old to drive our Ferraris we will be wishing we had driven them a lot more
Well, I'm curious as the thread starter is looking at a Black/black 80K Km car suspiciously similar to the 180K km car from Chicago on ebay last spring, a No Sale at $42K... Tifosi12 drove it.........the Chicago car.
