I've been keeping an eye on this car in my search. http://cgi.aol.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6212&item=2475617153&rd=1 what's up?
Car looks good through my untrained eyes. Are you still looking Vincent? Thought you bought a 355? How do you like it btw, esp compared to your 348? Would love a detailed comparo, as unbiased as you can.
Nice car with no reserve. Auction gets within a few hours of the end and looks like it is going to go cheap. Seller then cancels the auction and relists it again later with some excuse like "car was sold privately, but the deal fell through." There is no penalty for a seller cancelling the auction before it ends. This is just a way for sellers to generate interest in the car with little risk that the car will actually sell for below what they want for it. Just because an auction says "no reserve" doesn't mean it will end with the highest bid. I saw an early 80's 308 do that just a month or so ago. Bids only got to 18K and the auction was pulled with less than a day to go. Relisted a short time later and the bids went to 27K.
Might get to $65K, IMO. There is a lot of activity on Boxers these days it seems. That does look like a good unmolested example. Just in time for the high dollar 30K miles service! As Frank Parker constantly warns, be prepared to feed it!
my hunch is the ones with the ugly bumpers and blinkers don't move as fast as the euro-spec examples. this one looks to be in great shape though. and who knows what's up in the engine bay, leaks, services, etc. i've seen this one there for a while too. speaking of ebay... i can't belive this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6212&item=2473707235&rd=1
I doubt it will get that high, this Boxer is incorrect just from what you can see in the pics, painted Red carb covers and rear wing, I would imagine it has many other issues under the skin not including mechanical, the whole car screams red flag to me unless it sells cheap. That Cavallino on the lower rear grill looks rediculous, the car probably has these type of shortcut cheapo mods all over.Looking closer you see a cheap redye of the seats, wrong horn button, shifter knob, pedals, no records, shields probably drilled on, definately a bad conversion with the ugly bumpers and side marker lights
Jeff: I don't know the car, and I am not an expert on the 512BBi, but IMO fixing the paint on the carb covers and wing, redying the seats, removing the hokey cavallino and other stuff are all cheap and easy. The steering wheel and horn ring look identical to those on my same era 400i. The pedals and shift knob are common mods that may not be to your taste, but they don't look awful and also are easy to remedy. I can't really tell from the pictures, but my guess is that the shields are vinyl stick-ons. The seller states that full service history is available. Obviously a full PPI would be in order before bidding on this vehicle, but I don't see anything that necessarily screams red flag. You wouldn't be a bidder trying to keep the action down, would you? ;-) (JK!!!!) John
Atheyg, FYI, you could order Boxers with body colored carb covers, rear wing and front vents from the factory back when the cars were new. I have seen a blue one here in the Atlanta area that was ordered that way. So, that part may be original ?
My looking is really just purely educational at the moment. Though it is one of my favorite cars. After a little more seat time in the 355, I will post a comparison. I really enjoyed the 348 and disagree with a lot of the 348 naysayers. I do have to say that the additional horsepower of the 355 is welcomed.
