Part of the reason I had my Boxer repainted was due to 2 stress cracks near the inside of the bottom of the turn signals that went to the bottom of the hood, these are right by the hood hinges, the cracks were thru the paint and layer of bondo down to the aluminum, the shop grinded out the bondo all thru the area and refinished it.

My car is almost back together, just finishing up the bumpers to have them put back on and the black trim on the rear lid being re expoxyed, all the rest of thebalck has been done. window trims etc. as I was looking at the freshly painted hood sure enough the stress cracks are starting again near the turn signals, its not due to a paint issue as they put flex additives in the paint and supposedly you can paint a vinyl seat with this stuff and sit on it and it will not crack, so they have grinded off the bondo on the front hood by the turn signals and hinges suspecting a possible crack in the aluminum somewhere but nothing, so all I can assume is just metal fatigue in the al from opening and the weight of the hood thru the years causing this area to flex each time its opened and cracking the bondo paint.

Does anyone else have stress cracks in this area or have you seen it on other Boxers?

Iam trying to figure out if this is common on Boxers or something unusual with my car, the remedy will be to reinforce this area with aluminum rods and skin and refinish it over again.

    Thanks in advance

Atheyg, This is not an issue I have noticed on my Boxer. Mine is a BB, but I am not sure if it makes any difference which of the 3 Boxer models you have in this case.

No cracks here and I've never seen anything like that before on any Boxer that I have ever looked at.

I had the pleasure of a tour of a BBi undergoing an interior renovation earlier this year. The friend of a friend who's car it was claimed that it was a standard weak spot with BB's hoods - in particular the corners around the lights where one side is rolled and the other is cut. He claimed there was little you could do about it, although his was in good shape at the time (although hadn't gone anywhere for a fair bit of time with no interior, steering-wheel, dash etc).

    hope this helps

    Thanks for the replies.

What they ended up doing today was making a special metal bond in the area with special adhesives (were the aluminum joins the metal framing on the hood )all through the inner lower turn signal areas and riveted a small reinforcement in the corners where the bondo cracked, the aluminum hood is fine underneath but must flex alot when opening the hood, the repair will be invisible and should solve the problem if it doesn't they will go to more drastic methods of reinforcing the area with small aluminum rods and covering them with additional aluminum skin, but the metal bonding repair should work.

Yes, This is one of the few most vulnerable area's on the Boxer Body...if it is original paint, then it has these stress cracks....right in the lower outside corner on each side of the bright orange running/indicators lens, on the right angle a crack will always appear. And it is a miracle if those big rectangular lens fit in their recesses without scraping the inside lip of the body work....I believe it is a weak zone to begin with and after this lens is screwed down and any vibration or torque is applied to the bonnet ,the weakest point is first to go...
This is my 3rd boxer and all of them have had it! They all were original paint cars. ........An equally vulnerable spot is the vent slot behind the rear side window, look closely and there may be a hairline crack at the top of that vent.
Now did anyone mention paint crazing on original cars?????
