As I indicated in a post in the techie section, I am coverting my car back to original form and dispensing with all the US federalization gimmicktry that was put on twenty years ago. I plan to change the plates to classic status to avoid emmissions testing altogether, so I am not concerned with registering the car legally in my state (PA). If I ever happen to resell this car, however, potential buyers might have an issue since other states may not be as generous with emissions exemptions. What do you non-cat Boxer owners do and have you had similar thoughts about this? I have heard that a properly tuned BBi will pass most state's emission tests sans cats anyway, so the point might well be moot.

    Thanks

My carb 512 does not have cats, and I think never have had them. It will pass emissions testing in Oregon with proper tuning, although it has to be re-tuned after the test to be driveable.

From a resale perspective, I believe the major problem will be that it will not be able to be registered in California, and of course there are quite a few potential Boxer buyers in California. And generally, fewer potential buyers means a less desirable car, means a lower value, IMO.

Thanks. Injected cars can be "tuned" to pass most reasonable tests as well for tests designed for cars of that vintage. I have an orginal four-can exhaust system which I was going to put on, but it has no provision for test pipes or cats, so the answer might be to go with an aftermarket exhaust that has a space made for cats or test pipes. This way, at least they can be added if/when necessary.

Anyone else care to opine on the setup of their Boxer and if there have been issues with emissions testing?

I know you guys can't be posting on the internet about the highly illegal activity of removing catalytic convertors from cars ? That being said, I do have two cats, but I use a car cover while my Boxer's parked in the garage. If you don't want to use a car cover, buy one of those "scat mats" that you place on your car that shocks a cat if they get on it.

Why shock the cat ? That is being too nice to the cat.

How about a pumped up BB gun ?

    I've got two cats...

But, they are not allowed in the garage.
