That's really a matter of taste...I don't see why, if the original scheme of your car was indeed the "Boxer paint scheme", and that is attested by original documents, then how could the fact that you would have it painted back in its original color lower its value?

As for taste...I think I like it on GTBs, which are indeed "mini-boxers", less on GTS...

This. Personally, I'm not a fan of the Boxer paint on the 308 / 328, but if that was the original scheme, I think it's a good thing to make it as it was.

Were there 308s and 328s factory made with black underneath like Boxers?

Yes, indeed; that's what we were discussing.
It was an option on the catalogue (for the 308 GT 4 also) available with the first GTBs, the Vetroresinas, - or glass cars - on which it was fairly common.
The car could have any of the catalogue's color upper, the lower part in case of the "boxer paint scheme" was always black.
It remained as an option until the first year of the 328 production, but I don't think that for the 328 it was still listed as such, you had to ask for it.
Its popularity diminished after 1979-80; there are very, very few 328 in a factory "boxer paint scheme".

It is not to my taste but I can't vote NO for it. I think it is unique and if the original paint scheme I would keep it that way. I don't think there are a lot out there with this option. So if you are asking should I repaint it back to factory then I would say YES. If you ask me if I like it I would say NO. How's that for a screwed up answer. LOL

I like it, its sets your red car apart and I also like that it came from Maranello like that. Leave it the way it was when it was new. I like originality but your taste is your taste.

308s saw this to help them sell - 'real' Boxers were not legally imported into the US at the time. So 308s got the same 'color scheme' as their big-12 brother. Not 100% sure if the dealers were requesting this before- or after-delivery but if you look hard enough at some of the Ferrari factory photos in-period, I believe you'll find some cars leaving the factory line this way. Personally, I think its a big plus - its different, it has a story, and red/black or white/black looks good on the car. I have also seen yellow/black - its not bad.

I am not sure the original paint was the boxer type, it was just painted that way when I purchased it. How could I find out if this was the factory paint scheme? I also have a entire leather package on the interior, everything is covered in leather, including the removable hardtop. Tim Stafford (who maintains the vehicle) speculated that it could be Shedoni? and come from the factory that way; how could that be determined?

Tim's got some books which might indicate the Boxer paint scheme. When I owned 61553 (the Boxer trim 328 in my avatar) he showed me a book and it indicated my car came that way from the factory. Full leather interior would be harder to prove that it came from the factory without original documentation, I would suspect.

Personally not a fan of Boxer Paint. If you've ever seen a Boxer in straight paint without it, it really shows off the body lines. So IMHO, the boxer paint doesn't even look good on a Boxer (even though original).

I dont't like the scheme on either Boxer or 308. Breaks up the smooth bodyline integrity on both cars and also quite dated.

Have you registered the car on the Ferrari site in the Owners section? Not sure if it would list the Boxer aspect of the paint scheme but it will tell you the original color of the exterior and interior.

3x8's and Boxers are dated anyway. IMO, they should be as they left the factory. But to each his own.

I seem to recall, out of my mind, that the specific code on any factory papers for a "boxer paint scheme" was: 20-B-50 (indicating matt black paint) + 20-T-380 (indicating satin finish) + the code for the other body color.

However, I defer to Big Tex, he knows the "Boxer Paint Scheme" cars quite well, he collects them all over Texas...

After 1984, the final Boxers had been made, it fell from fashion after that.

Very few 328s, I would say..

Two of my three have it from the Factory, I'll add it to the last one, for uniformity.
It lowers the car, visually, and also draws the eyes to the contour of the fender/roof profile, the strongest styling elements of Pininfarina's shape

Well, you can touch up dents and damage with Rustoleum BarB Que Black spray cans, and that feature is rather handy, when you drive as "rough' as I do !!

You DO lose the "pop" of the mid line reveal, in black, and that is a nice accent on a solid body colored car....

I did not have those codes! LOL!

All of mine are the Satin apparently, a friend once commented it was enough gloss to see reflections of the highway stripes in it, in motion....

    Interesting observation, I thought.....

I drive like a little old lady most of the time anyway so not so much of a concern.

Agree, particularly in the area of wheels. IMO nothing better looking than the factory 5-spoke; aftermarket ones with little exception tend to make for a pimped-out effect.
